Android Pie (left, center) and Android Q (right). In Beta 1 the theming section is in Developer options, but hopefully it will be available as part of the regular settings in the end.

Google has released its first official preview of Android Q for developers, making it available in a beta version. The half-baked OS is far from its final release and users will experience problems.

It is advised not to install Android Q beta on your primary device as some functions might not work as they are supposed to.

If you are on Android Q, you can find out how to enable the new desktop mode here.

The first beta and SDK traditionally introduce deep-level changes; most new userland features arrive in subsequent releases, later in the spring, while the twee confectionery or pudding-themed name is added around "launch" time in the summer.

Despite security researchers proving that they can still track devices with randomized MAC addresses, supporting this feature will reduce the efficiency of some data harvesting and user tracking operations. You can backup data simply by going into Settings System Backup.

If you own a Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel and Pixel 3 XL you can access this update now.

Google Announces Android Q Beta: Faster Apps, Privacy Boosts, and More

Over at XDA Developers while rummaging through the code found within an app called ConnectivityMonitor which lists all Pixel devices and their code-names: Pixel and Pixel XL ("sailfish" and "marlin"), Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL ("walleye" and "taimen"), and Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL ("blueline" and "crosshatch") and finally "B4S4" phones "bonito" and "sargo".

It's expected to carry all the modern connectivities like 3.5 mm jack and a 12 MP rear camera that's capable of recording 1080p videos and of course the Google lens that's expected to get into this device! Make sure you've Wi-Fi and the phone is charged above 75 percent during the update.

The Android Q beta brings multiple improvements over last year's Android 9 Pie. Google is also pushing native support for foldable displays, which is hardly surprising given that Samsung, Huawei and many other manufacturers are pursuing flexible technology. While we covered almost all the major features that Google will be introducing in the new Android OS, there are still a few features that are being revealed in parts.

Furthermore, the operating system now gives owners the option to let applications access the device's location "only when the app is in use" rather than all the time.

The Wi-Fi stack in Android Q has been rebuilt to improve privacy and performance, and also improve use cases like managing IoT devices and suggesting internet connections without requiring the location permission.

Apps will be able to show key system settings in their own context, not having to point you to a specific part of Settings and then hope you keep in mind to go back once you've enabled whichever option the app needed.
