Nancy Pelosi, the United States' top-ranking Democrat and subject of a recent meme, says her party has no immediate plans to back impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump because "he's just not worth it".

"It's really about whether or not we are going to tolerate and continue to allow an unfit president to be in office", he said.

Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak told The Epoch Times that Pelosi "knows that impeachment is not popular with the broader public and would be a political loser for House Democrats". There are only 47 Democrats in the current Senate (counting the two independents, Angus King and Bernie Sanders), so at least 20 Republicans would have to vote to convict Trump.

"I see little to be gained by putting the country through that kind of wrenching experience", Mr. Schiff, California Democrat, said.

Some in the party would prefer a political battle against Trump at the ballot box, rather than an impeachment effort waged in Congress.

A momentous question hanging over Washington is whether investigations into President Donald Trump will prompt the U.S. Congress to try to remove him from office through the impeachment process set out in the U.S. Constitution.

Green dismissed the idea that some bipartisan consensus was needed for impeachment. Would an impeachment help rally the Democratic party together or cause division?

"We're going to impeach the motherf*****", she told a crowd just hours after she was sworn into office in November.

As an election nears, "I think there is an inherent consideration that perhaps the voters should decide this", added Chabot, a House Judiciary Committee member.

In a caucus meeting Tuesday morning, Pelosi encouraged Democrats to "keep our eye on the prize" as "we look at what this president is doing to this great country".

Most important is that, by taking impeachment off the table now, barring some new big revelations that spark bipartisan outrage, you give tacit assent to Trump's worst behavior. And he believes that his and others' efforts to highlight that has actually prevented Trump from committing more crimes.

Pelosi's comments come after senior Democratic chairs have stepped up their probes of Trump's finances and the Trump White House. The Tennessee Democrat said he hasn't done so this session "because I don't think the votes are anywhere near being there".

At the 2018 midterms, Democrats found success by largely ignoring Mr Trump - and his incendiary comments on issues like immigration - and campaigning on issues like healthcare. "So until they realize that - some evidence comes out that's akin to a smoking gun, they may not change".

"Do we want to drag him down or do we want to lift people up?"

When she became House Speaker in 2007, she resisted pressure from her liberal flank to launch impeachment proceedings against former president George W. Bush over the Iraq War.

That thinking among Democrats has shifted, slightly, in part because of the possibility that Mueller's report will not be decisive and because his investigation is more narrowly focused.

"If you think impeaching Bill Clinton was a bad idea, which I think most Democrats do, then you now have to think impeaching Trump is a bad idea", Burstein said, unless something that is clearly an impeachable offense is uncovered. "And if they do produce that, then I think it will nearly be inevitable that we'll have to go there because the Judiciary Committee has to protect the Constitution".
