Emergency teams were at the scene of a building collapse in Lagos, Nigeria, on Wednesday, March 13.

"It is believed that many people including children are now trapped in the building", said Ibrahmi Farinloye, a spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency's southwest region.

Initial reports had said eight children had died.

A visit by the News Agency of Nigeria correspondent to the General Hospitals in Marina and Gbagada in Lagos, on Thursday, showed that some of the patients had been stabilised, while others were still being attended to.

Ambode also said the school had been set up illegally and that buildings in the area were undergoing integrity testing.

The South-West Zonal Head of Public Affairs of the Agency, Ibrahim Farinloye said the rescue operation was ongoing as at 8pm.

The Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr Wasiu Esinlokun, who also visited the scene, said a notice for demolition was served on the building on Tuesday, a day before it collapsed. Both said not all children were at the school because of sports activities. "Our response units are already here; we are getting additional cranes to be able to go deeper than where we are now to rescue more lives", the governor said.

"On the part of the government, we would immediately take care of whatever it is that we can do, including the hospital bills", he said.
