  • Trump’s ex campaign chairman jailed for fraud

Manafort told the judge he is soon turning 70 and is sole caregiver to his 66-year-old wife.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance announced 16 state charges against Manafort, including residential mortgage fraud and falsifying business records to commit fraud.

The New York City case not only added to Manafort's legal woes but also multiplied them.

Donald Trump's ex-campaign chief Paul Manafort has been jailed for 43 more months on charges stemming from the Russian Federation investigation.

Manafort's Virginia trial last summer laid bare a lavish lifestyle, bolstered by his foreign lobbying patrons and undercut when his overseas business and clients dried up.

Manafort's hair is now mostly gray, and he reviewed documents in court ahead of the judge's ruling. The Mueller indictment states that Manafort got the apartment for $2.85 million after transferring funds from a company in Cyprus, then falsely claimed it was a second home for his daughter and son-in-law, and used it as an Airbnb rental.

But Jackson noted that she must factor in the common conduct in the two cases and signaled early the complexity of that decision. "At each juncture, though, Mr Manafort chose to take a different path", Mr Weissmann said. That affects what the judge called the "algebra" involved with determining prison sentences, she said.

Manafort last week and on Wednesday was sentenced to a total of 7 1/2 years in prison in a pair of cases in Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Manafort was being sentenced for concealing from the government foreign lobbying work he did on behalf of a pro-Russia Ukrainian political party. Others who have pleaded guilty include former campaign aides Rick Gates and George Papadopoulos, former US national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump personal lawyer Michael Cohen. He was indicted on conspiracy charges last summer.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson effectively telegraphed Wednesday morning Manafort's sentence would not be "clean up" for the light sentence passed down last week by Judge T.S. Ellis.

At the same time, he said he hoped Manafort would use his time behind bars to reflect on his behavior.

INDIAN WELLS WTA: Osaka launches title defence in style
No. 2 seed Simona Halep needed almost two hours to beat qualifier Kateryna Kozlova 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the third round. Defending champion Osaka beat Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 6-4 in her first attempt at defending a WTA Tour title.

Manafort's attorneys nonetheless argued that he had shown contrition by admitting guilt and that he has been struggling against an unfair and incorrect portrayal of himself in the press. They have also said the case does not prove that the campaign worked with Russian Federation to help Trump win the election. "I ask you to think of this and our need for each other as you deliberate".

Manafort himself was less combative. "Let me be very clear: I accept responsibility for the acts that have brought us here today".

"I believe that is not reflective of someone who has learned a harsh lesson".

Jackson, who had revoked Manafort's house arrest and jailed him last June after hearing allegations that he tampered with witnesses, imposed a 73-month sentence on Manafort.

Jackson acknowledged Manafort's generosity and care for his family and other causes, calling them "commendable", and said she did not discount that she did "not know everything that there is" to Paul Manafort, or will be to him. "Hard to overstate", Jackson said.

The Atlantic's Natasha Bertrand (an MSNBC contributor) tweeted that Kevin Downing, one of Manafort's lawyers, "is saying that Judge ABJ found that there was no evidence of Russian Federation collusion" and that protestors responded, "That's not what she said".

She also said Manafort's expression of remorse rang hollow.

Jackson suggested that argument was aimed at winning a pardon from Trump.

Prosecutors are updating judges this week on the cooperation provided by other key defendants in the case.

Wednesday's sentencing comes in a week of activity for the investigation.
