Woods skipping API with neck strain

  • Tiger Woods last played in the World Golf Championships Mexico Championship on Feb. 24 in Mexico City

The 43-year-old, an eight-time victor of the tournament at Bay Hill in Orlando, announced on Twitter that he had been struggling with the problem for several weeks.

"Unfortunately due to a neck strain that I've had for a few weeks, I'm forced to withdraw from the API", Woods posted.

Woods publicly announced on Monday that his recent treatment for a neck strain had not improved enough to take part in the tour event.

The 14-time major victor insists that it is not a long-term complaint, but his history of back injuries makes the concern inevitable.

Woods added that he would send his regrets for missing one of his favorite tournaments, at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, to Palmer's family.

A week later, he played in the WGC Mexico Championship and finished tied for 10th.

He hopes to return to action at the Players Championship at Sawgrass, Florida, on March 14-17. Then comes the WCG Match Play tournament.

Woods has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational eight times during his storied career.

Woods is an eight-time victor at Bay Hill.

Thus far in the 2019 season, the 43-year old has finished tied for 20th at the Farmers Insurance Open, T15 at the Genesis Open and T10 at the WGC-Mexico Championship. Cold temperatures and weather delays at the Genesis Open in California made for a long week, with Woods and many others forced to play almost 54 holes on the weekend.

Woods didn't specify what caused his neck pain, but he skipped the Honda Classic last week and during the British Open previous year, he wore KT Tape on his neck after he woke up with stiffness. He did make sure to note that his injury is not considered long-term.
