Trudeau: Crisis deepens as second minister quits

The scandal has rocked Trudeau's government. Many were already lining up to express their fealty Monday. Katie (Telford) was like "we don't want to debate legalities anymore'". We even encourage it.

Robert Bothwell, a professor at the University of Toronto, said the resignations speak to Trudeau's failure to connect with his own troops.

As the House of Commons justice committee continues to hear testimony related to the case, Trudeau's party is trailing in the polls.

But Philpott is a former family physician who lost a child while working in Niger - she knows real life and death issues, and resigning from cabinet is not that.

"I must abide by my core values, my ethical responsibilities and constitutional obligations". Jane Philpott was mostly recently the president of the Treasury Board and also served as health minister.

Most Liberal members of parliament have so far backed Trudeau but there are signs of strain. He is once again without a president of Treasury Board.

Moments earlier, Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna had pumped up the crowd, stressing the importance of tackling global warming and its devastating impacts on cities and our daily lives, while noting that Trudeau was someone who always had her back on the file. Singh calls for a public inquiry into the scandal.

The woman continued to shout until the Liberal supporters around clapped and cheered to drown out her voice. "Nobody in government has done more to push reconciliation than Ms. Philpott".

Wilson-Raybould, of course, quit cabinet shortly after the shuffle to Veterans Affairs when the proverbial other shoe she had been expecting dropped. Philpott resigned shortly afterwards.

But we are relying entirely on the former justice minister's testimony for much of the narrative that has been accepted as gospel by so many Canadians - some of which came to her second-hand from her former chief of staff, Jessica Prince.

The pair's departure is a blow to Trudeau's brand.

Sputnik: Why would the Trudeau office be interested in intervening in this corruption case? A remediation agreement is a kind of plea bargain that would force the company to pay stiff penalties but avoid a criminal conviction that could financially cripple it.

The controversy surrounding corrupt dealings by SNC-Lavalin has received extensive coverage in the Quebec media since 2012.

In his letter Scheer alleges that Trudeau contravened Section 423.1 (1) of the Criminal Code "by conduct with the intent to provoke fear in the attorney general". She said keeping her position would require her to publicly defend the government and its policies, which she could no longer do.

"The solemn principles at stake are the independence and integrity of our justice system", said Philpott.

She added: "I experienced a consistent and sustained effort by many people within the government to seek to politically interfere in the exercise of prosecutorial discretion in my role as the attorney general of Canada in an inappropriate effort".

February 7 - Citing unnamed sources, the Globe and Mail newspaper reports that Trudeau's aides attempted to press Wilson-Raybould, while attorney general, to intervene in the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, and that exasperation with her lack of co-operation was one reason for shuffling her out of the justice portfolio.

New Democrat MP Charlie Angus wrote to Trudeau on Monday, arguing that Wernick's impartiality as the country's top public servant had been irreparably compromised and demanding his resignation.

"While I am disappointed, I understand her decision to step down".

Wilson-Raybould herself resigned abruptly in February.

January 14, 2019 - Trudeau shuffles his cabinet after the resignation of Treasury Board president Scott Brison. Philpott took over the post from Scott Brison, who retired from politics.

Why are they remaining in the Liberal tent? The Privy Council clerk also challenges Wilson-Raybould's assertion that solicitor-client privilege prevents her from responding to allegations. She pointed the finger right at him, saying he was the guy directing all this secret pressure as a way to shore up his party's political support.

"I have been considering the events that have shaken the federal government in recent weeks and after serious reflection, I have concluded that I must resign as a member of Cabinet", Philpott said on Twitter. "Thank you ↕janephilpott for articulating this beautifully", Caesar-Chavannes wrote. In Quebec, where the issue matters most, the Liberals become by default the champion of local head offices, jobs, and incomes, regardless of how the SNC-Lavalin corruption case turns out.
