  • How To Enable Dark Mode for Messenger on Android and iOS

You can activate and disable it at will!

IMPORTANT: it can not be the moon emoji with the face - it must be the left-facing, crescent moon emoji.

Some users have reported instances of a pop-up window that will inform you of the new feature, though that didn't happen in our experience.

What you you need to do is send a crescent moon emoji to one of your contacts in a message.

"Messenger's dark mode provides lower brightness while maintaining contrast and vibrancy", reads the description from Facebook's blog post. If you're not, the trick to unlock dark mode won't work.

Facebook Messenger for Android has received an experimental dark mode feature after it was first hinted at last May (via Android Police).

After that, you'll see an animation of a bunch of moons falling down from the top of the app, together with the query to enable the dark mode option in the app's settings. As long as you chose the correct one, moon emoji will start falling down on your screen. It's unclear whether or not the main Facebook app will also gain dark mode at some point, but depending on the general reaction to the feature in Messenger, it might be coming soon as well. In most cases, dark modes are turned on by flipping a switch in software. The feature arrives following several other recent dark mode app developments as Google prepares for native dark mode support in Android Q.
