In total, six satellites were put into orbit, and OneWeb plans an eventual constellation of over 650 satellites by 2021.

"The atmosphere was tense but we got the result we wanted - the satellites talked back", the message reads. Approximately one hour after a successful launch, the first two OneWeb satellites separated from the rocket's Fregat upper stage.

The first six OneWeb satellites for world-wide Internet are launched on Board a Soyuz rocket into space.

As the opening launch on behalf of the satellite operator OneWeb, today's flight VS21 paves the way for the deployment phase of its initial constellation  for which Arianespace is to operate 20 more medium-lift Soyuz launches from three spaceports (Kourou in French Guiana; Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan and Vostochny in Russia) through 2020. OneWeb's satellites are manufactured by OneWeb Satellites, a joint venture between OneWeb and Airbus Defence and Space. Using this next-generation, highly advanced satellites arranged in the night sky in the form of artificial constellations, OneWeb will attempt to provide seamless connectivity of the internet throughout the world and set up fantastic communication globally.

It is a joint project between the aerospace and defence group Airbus and the USA telecommunications company, OneWeb, is behind the Internet pioneer Greg Wyler. Companies like Elon Musk's SpaceX, LeoSat Enterprises, and Canada's Telesat are working to enable data networks with hundreds or even thousands of tiny satellites that orbit closer to Earth than traditional communications satellites, a radical shift made possible by leaps in laser technology and computer chips.

These half-dozen satellites are considered pioneers, and are necessary to "bring into use" the frequencies allocated by the Federal Communications Commission.

OneWeb's mission is to deliver global communications through a next-generation satellite constellation that brings seamless connectivity to everyone, everywhere.

The government of Rwanda has caught the attention of the world after it announced earlier this week, through the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, that the country will launch a satellite that will provide broadband internet to schools in remote areas.

"Our system will be able to offer significantly lower latency and faster speeds", said Steckel. The satellites utilise the Ka and Ku spectrum bands to communicate with the Groud Network, the section of the OneWeb infrastructure that will connect the network to the internet.
