  • SpaceX Is Launching Israel's First Mission to the Moon Tonight

There is a Falcon-9 rocket, the space travel company SpaceX, Tesla boss Elon Musk launched on time at 2.45 PM Central European time.

Israel seeks to become only the fourth country to successfully land on the moon, after Russian Federation, the US and China.

The rocket was returning from a mission to launch a trio of lunar craft into space, including a $100 million Israeli moon lander from SpaceIL the first private mission to the moon. It's expected to reach the moon on April 4 and land on April 11.

"Following stage separation, SpaceX will attempt to land Falcon 9's first stage on the "Of Course I Still Love You" droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean". At 9:20 p.m., SpaceX Tweeted that there was a "successful deployment of the SpaceIL lunar lander confirmed, starting the spacecraft's two-month voyage to the Moon".

The static fire test for the launch was completed on Monday with the first launch window opening on Thursday, there was a backup window scheduled for Friday just in case the first launch had to be scrubbed. This helps explain why Beresheet is taking such a long and circuitous route to the moon - the lander didn't have its own dedicated rocket to launch it on a direct path.

The landing sequence is set to take around 15 minutes and will monitored by a joint group of scientists and engineers from the Israel Space Agency (ISA), the Weizmann Institute of Science, and NASA.

Trump seeks to recoup 'wasted' California high-speed rail funds
Originally, the project was conceived to connect the Los Angeles basin with San Francisco's Bay Area in two hours and 40 minutes. It's put toward constructing a 119-mile (191.5-kilometer) segment of track in the Central Valley expected to cost $10.6 billion.

If the mission is successful, Israel will join the ranks of the United States, China, and Russian Federation to have made a controlled landing on the moon. The organization was founded by three engineers: Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari, and Yonatan Winetraub, who answered the global challenge presented by Google Lunar XPRIZE: to build, launch and land an unmanned spacecraft on the moon.

The unmanned robotic lander is called Beresheet, Hebrew for "in the beginning" and was paid for by Israeli non-profit SpaceIL.

The rocket also contains an Indonesian satellite and a satellite of the US Air Force Research Laboratory.

Initially, the amateur rocket scientists imagined they could use the winnings of Google's Lunar X Prize ($20m) to reach the moon.

SpaceIL does not plan to continue after this mission.

SpaceIL, the nonprofit organization behind the effort, participated in the Google Lunar XPrize, which offered a $30 million reward for a privately funded team to land an automated spacecraft. It will also bring a time capsule to the Moon, including the Israeli flag, the country's national anthem, "Hatikvah", dictionaries in 27 languages, the Bible, and a children's book about the mission.
