British Minister Sees EU as 'Irresponsible' for Refusal to Renegotiate Brexit

The British leader will meet European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker before holding separate talks with European Council president Donald Tusk, the two sides said. They envisage circumstances where the Northern Ireland-only provisions of the backstop are left intact as Great Britain seeks to diverge, re-opening the possibility of customs barriers within the United Kingdom-something that caused great concern at the time of the EU's original backstop proposal past year, and ruled out by the prime minister again this week.
Corbyn also reiterated that there must not be a return to a hard border in Northern Ireland, adding that all steps must be taken to avoid a no-deal Brexit.
May discussed putting a time limit on the so-called Irish border backstop in talks with Northern Ireland's Ulster Unionist Party, the party's leader said on Wednesday.
"More than ever this has demonstrated why we need to be part of an global treaty that a prime minister, parliament or government of the day can not abrogate it".
"The Taoiseach (prime minister) will use the opportunity once again to thank the institutions, and the other Member States, for their continuing support for Ireland", an Irish government statement said.
There was little sign of appetite from the European Union side to rewrite the agreement reached by Mrs May and Mr Juncker in November but rejected by a 230-vote margin in the Commons last month.
SDLP leader Colum Eastwood, who was third in to see Mrs May, said she needed to understand there was no alternative to the backstop.
We strongly reject the suggestion that the backstop would damage the integrity of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland also voted narrowly in favor of remaining in the European Union in 2016's referendum.
May, on a visit to Belfast on Tuesday, tried to reassure Northern Ireland that she can deliver an orderly Brexit that will ensure peace in a province riven by three decades of sectarian conflict until a 1998 accord.
The reaction was swift from the Brexiteers' ERG group, with one source saying: "Even if she doesn't mean what she said, we still do".
Mrs May is now seeking new tweaks to the negotiated deal which was voted down by the House of Commons last month.
He said he did not think a no-deal situation was the most probable one and while alternative arrangements could be considered for the future, the backstop cannot be replaced.
"It remains the Northern Ireland Secretary's view that the majority of the people of Northern Ireland continue to support the current political settlement and that the circumstances requiring a border poll are not satisfied".
In any of the above cases, the extension of article 50 is highly probable, but the probability of a second referendum or revocation of the Brexit is reduced.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also said the agreement couldn't be renegotiated, although questions surrounding border arrangements could be addressed in a declaration on the future relationship between the European Union and Britain.
The prime minister will say: 'I know this is a concerning time for many people here in Ireland.
Critics of the backstop argue its lack of any agreed time-limit is unacceptable as it could see the United Kingdom locked into a customs union deal with the EU indefinitely and Northern Ireland kept under EU single market rules. The former First Minister said it had endured because it had been driven by local communities.
