With 47 cases confirmed in the Pacific Northwest, health experts say the solution to stopping the spread is very simple: the vaccine works and if you're not sure if you've had it, a blood test can determine if you're immune.

"Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus, which spreads to others through coughing and sneezing", Umair Shah, the executive director of Harris County Public Health said in a statement confirming the new cases in Houston. Disregarding a child's immunization schedule is a lame excuse of those who are not fully aware of the benefits and protection that their child can get after being vaccinated. For information about other measles cases in Washington, visit the Washington State Department of Health measles webpage.

Measles usually manifests as a combination of high fever, as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit, along with what is known as the three Cs: cough, coryza (another word for runny nose), and conjunctivitis or pink eye, Sammons explained. One patient received a vaccination against MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), but the health agency declined to provide more details on that case "to protect the patient's privacy".

Washington isn't the only state grappling with a disease.

If you have questions about measles or the measles vaccine, talk to your doctor.

Prior to the vaccine, measles caused approximately 450 to 500 deaths each year in the United States.

Democratic Rep. Monica Stonier of Vancouver, a co-signer on the bill, said she would prefer an even broader proposal, but "right now we're looking at what we can get moved". One person had one dose of the vaccine, which is 93 percent effective. Forty-one of them had not been vaccinated against the disease. "If it gets more severe, you are basically at the mercy of the virus".

Most of the time, as with other childhood viruses, people weather it fine, but there can be complications.

Both vaccines are typically given in two doses to young children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Despite the high number of patients, De Guzman clarified that the hospital is still taking in more patients with measles.

Anti-vaccination paranoia is now a clear indication that our society has regressed.

It's time for the majority of parents to trust the OR, national and global scientific communities and get their kids immunized. Between 1985 and 1992, death from measles was reported in approximately 2 out of every 1,000 USA measles cases, with pneumonia accounting for about 60% of these deaths, according to the CDC.
