Travellers in Brisbane Airport's global terminal fled in terror as a man threatened a woman with a knife and claimed to have a bomb, but police have ruled out terrorism.

The man was taken to the Brisbane watch house where he was charged on Sunday morning with staging a bomb hoax, making a false statement, assault, contravening a domestic violence order, stalking and stealing.

Queensland police said the incident began at around 9 pm (1100 GMT) on Saturday in the terminal's food court, when the man allegedly pulled out a knife after an argument with a woman, reportedly a family member. "It was a blood-curdling little scream, and she just bolted across the forecourt", a man, who was not identified, told Nine Network television.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing high-pitched screams and seeing several young women run away as an "older gentleman" brandished a knife, causing others to flee.

A woman, who was not identified, told Nine that the sound of the woman screaming sent people running.

The incident ended when police shot the man with non-lethal beanbag rounds, after which he surrendered to the officers.

Transfer roundup: Everton told they must pay £35m to sign Michy Batshuayi
A permanent move away would make sense for the Belgian, however, we have failed with some transfers going on to become big names. As things stand, it looks like Batshuayi will have to decide between Real Betis and West Ham.

"He's been examined by [paramedics], he has no significant injuries", Superintendent Tony Fleming said.

"It will take some time to get operations back to normal", an airport representative said in a statement.

The most serious charge was threatening to destroy an aviation facility, which carries a potential sentence of 10 years in prison.

The man will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

"I will say that the police officers who were dealing with that in close proximity showed a great deal of bravery, and the outcome of no loss of life here is a good outcome", he said. "The alleged behaviors ... what he was saying, what he was doing was certainly terrifying". Stewart said more than one fake device had been found and all were inert.

Police will allege the exclusion zone in Surfers Paradise was a precaution related to the Brisbane Airport incident.
