  • ‘A lack of respect’: Netflix hit ‘Bird Box’ used actual footage from disaster

Netflix is under fire for using footage from a deadly 2013 rail disaster in Canada in at least one of its recent releases. In the scene, a nuclear explosion ravages the streets of London, though the footage used to depict the explosion and its aftermath, which includes an oil tanker burned in the background, is partly taken from the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster.

It's not the first time "Bird Box" has caused an outcry.

News reports the streaming service confirmed that footage captured in the aftermath of a Canadian train derailment had been used as part of a fictional news item in the horror flick.

The current mayor of Lac-Mégantic, Julie Morin, is on the forefront of the outrage, telling local press, "We are looking for assurances from Netflix that they are going to remove [the footage]".

"It's not as though you're not going to show them or play them - we've all seen the Challenger blow up, played over and over and over when that story happened", he said.

"Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box - best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!" the tweet read.

Earlier this week, similar footage was found to have been used in the Canadian-American science-fiction drama Travelers.

The company has already promised that this platform will create a number of models with different types of bodies. On the rendering shows a auto with a dynamic silhouette in the spirit XT5 models and futuristic "blind" front.

Netflix spokespeople have declined repeated requests for comment on the controversy.

Peacock Alley Entertainment, who obtained the footage from stock photography company Pond 5, claimed they "weren't aware of its specific source".

Producers of another Netflix show, however, announced they would be replacing the same footage used in an episode after outrage.

Netflix said in a statement that with movies like Roma, from Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, "we are beginning to have our original movie offering mirror the success of our series".

Morin said she spoke with a Netflix representative today and asked the company to review its catalogue and remove the images.

Carrie Mudd, president of Toronto-based Peacock Alley Entertainment Inc., which makes Travelers, said her company acquired the footage from a stock image vendor called Pond 5. YouTube is cracking down on a wave of users committing so-called "Bird Box Challenges" - like driving a vehicle while blindfolded.
