Here's bad news for people who share their Netflix and other streaming service accounts: a new software could crack down on users who share passwords with others.
Once data has been analysed, the streaming service can then decide the course of action for users believed to be sharing their passwords.
This week at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, video software provider Synamedia revealed new technology that could help put an end to account sharing.
Don't panic if you're just sharing with family and friends, as Netflix may just nudge you to upgrade to a premium account. The factors that they consider include the location of the user, the device being used, and the local time.
Software maker Synamedia said that the artificial intelligence system looks for potentially fraudulent activity.
Research quoted by Synamedia reported that younger generations are used to accessing streaming services for free and rarely become paying customers. Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service with a greater number of concurrent users.
Synamedia has started testing the system and in future it will offer its services to Netflix and other streaming services.
'School staff member' detained after 20 primary pupils wounded in Beijing attack
In November, five people were killed when a auto ploughed into a crowd of children outside a north-eastern Chinese nursery. In October last year, a 39-year-old woman was detained on suspicion of stabbing 14 children at a kindergarten in Chongqing.
The new system - called the Credentials Sharing Insight is now being trialed by a number of firms.
"A typical pattern would be you have a subscriber that is simultaneously watching content on the East Coast and West Coast of the US", Synamedia's CTO, Jean-Marc Racine, told The Verge.
'It's a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream'.
One survey found that 26 percent of millennials use the password from someone else's account to watch shows on an online streaming service.
According to Synamedia, its system is now undergoing pilot trials at a number of undisclosed streaming firms.
The service, called Credentials Sharing Insights, uses AI, behavioral analytics and machine learning, which identifies, monitors and analyzes credentials sharing activity across streaming accounts. It is already in trials with some pay-TV operators.
