Manafort accused of sharing polling data with Russian allegedly linked to Kremlin

  • Manafort’s Lawyers Accidentally Revealed an Exchange Between the Trump Campaign and a Man Trained by Russian Military Intelligence

The court filing was meant to rebut Mueller's contentions that Manafort continued to lie to investigators after agreeing to a plea deal for limited charges that would avert a trial on a number of other counts.

Manafort was among the first Americans charged in Mueller's investigation and has been among the central characters in the case, having led the campaign during the Republican convention and as, U.S. intelligence officials say, Russian Federation was working to sway the election in Trump's favor.

Paul Manafort's lawyers responded to claims that he repeatedly lied to Special Counsel Robert Mueller during debriefings with prosecutors in documents filed under seal, out of view of the public, according to his spokesman.

Mueller claimed in a November 26 filing that Manafort breached his plea deal and "committed federal crimes by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the special counsel's office on a variety of subject matters".

In another faultily redacted portion, Manafort's attorneys revealed that an unnamed third party texted Manafort last May asking to use his name as a point of introduction if the person met with Trump.

In February 2017, Kilimnik told RFE/RL that he had done many things while advising Manafort, including work on a proposed a peace plan, but he suggested Manafort wasn't involved - a claim that was undermined by the January 8 court filing.

He has been wheelchair bound for months, his lawyers say, because of gout, and has been kept essentially in solitary confinement for his own safety.

In the Tuesday filing, Manafort's lawyers said the disagreement can be dealt with through the sentencing process, because prosecutors have said they have no plans to file fresh charges.

Manafort's lawyers say he was awakened before dawn on the days he was interviewed and normally spent the entire day talking with investigators.

They contended the 69-year-old Manafort, facing years in prison, had breached the cooperation agreement that was reached when he pleaded guilty to cheating US tax authorities, violating federal lobbying laws and obstructing justice in connection with his long-time lobbying efforts for deposed Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych in the years before he worked on Trump's campaign. During a proffer meeting with prosecutors on September 11, Manafort told investigators "he would have given the Ukrainian peace plan more thought" had he not been working on Trump's campaign at the time.

They add the other example of alleged contact with administration officials "is hearsay purportedly offered by an undisclosed third party and the defense has not been provided with the statement".

Federal prosecutors convinced a jury in August 2018 to convict Manafort on eight of 18 bank and tax fraud charges in a trial in NY.

Kilimnik is a veteran of the Russian army whom Mueller accused of having ties to Russian intelligence agencies.

Tuesday's developments are the latest dramatic turn of events in Manafort's case, more than a year after Mueller first charged him with a series of crimes stemming from his lobbying on behalf of a pro-Russian oligarch and political party in Ukraine.

However, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson could hold such a hearing if she found it necessary.

Manafort will not ask for a hearing regarding the prosecution's accusations, according to the filings.

A jury in Alexandria, Va., convicted Manafort on charges of bank and tax fraud in August, after which he agreed to plead guilty to two separate charges and cooperate with Mueller's investigation. Sentencing in that case - which could result in a lengthy prison term - is scheduled for next month.
