Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro vows to ease gun laws after taking office

Netanyahu and his wife were greeted at the airport Friday by the incoming president's son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, and Rio Mayor Marcelo Bezerra Crivella.

The prime minister made the planned trip to Brazil for Bolsonaro's January 1 inauguration despite a political crisis back home that forced him to schedule early elections.

On Sunday, Netanyahu is scheduled to meet separately with leading Brazilian journalists, leaders of the Jewish community; leaders of the Evangelical community; and Honduras president Juan Orlando Hernandez.

Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, will be staying in Rio until Tuesday, when they will fly to Brasilia for the inauguration.

The official added that Pompeo would welcome Bolsonaro's pledge for Brazil to join the U.S.in moving its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Bolsonaro said that "we are opening a new era in ties, and making history".

"Brazil is the land of land of promise", Netanyahu said in a line that - after it was translated into Portuguese - brought a small smile to Bolsonaro, who otherwise stood rather expressionless during the statements.

Netanyahu, calling his visit "historic", also spoke of "the brotherhood, the alliance" the two planned as something that "can carry us to great heights". But Bolsonaro and Netanyahu have developed an increasingly warm relationship with similar views on security issues.

"I am certain that the Secretary and the President-elect will discuss the human rights", the State Department official told reporters.

He has sought to expand Israel's diplomatic reach through technology and defence exports, and has worked to persuade more countries to vote in his country's favour at the United Nations, where it faces frequent criticism over its treatment of the Palestinians.
