In the only match of the Monday's program in Perth, Greece defeated the United States of America 2-1 to score their first win at this year's Hopman Cup, bouncing back after a loss against Great Britain to stay in contention for the place in the final.

In the deciding mixed doubles, played under the match tiebreak format, the Greeks had multiple match points, but it was the Britons who prevailed in three sets.

"This was a great start but obviously a long way to go here and in Melbourne [for the Australian Open]", Federer said.

The 37-year-old Federer sent his 23-year-old opponent from Britain back to reality in a one-sided match lasting just 57 minutes. "There are a few matches to come here".

And the 37-year-old is looking forward to the mixed doubles clash with the U.S., where he will face off against 23-time grand slam victor Serena Williams.

"I admire everything she's done on and off the court".

And Switzerland completed a 3-0 whitewash when Federer and Bencic teamed up to beat Norrie and Boulter in the mixed doubles by a 4-3 (5-4) 4-1 scoreline.

"I was making a lot of errors".

The 20-time Grand Slam singles champion broke immediately in the second set and looked sharp as he cruised to an easy first-up victory in the tournament.

Williams will need to beat world No.41 Maria Sakkari in the women's singles rubber to keep the tie alive. "I wasn't missing any rhythm", Federer said after his win over world No.91 Norrie.

"This time it's against Serena, who is one of the biggest champions ever in our sport - men and women combined".

Andy Murray aims to kick-start his stalled career in Brisbane this week after an injury-plagued 2018, with Spanish great Rafael Nadal also playing as he tests his troubled knee ahead of the Australian Open.

Bencic and Federer are the defending champions.

Federer faced three break points in his first service game, but kept his cool to race out to a 5-0 lead. You know I've been training offseason to be ready for Roger, so not sure how I'm going to do but we'll see'.

"It's very exciting for both of us", Federer said. "I was happy with all aspects of my game, footwork, offensive play, serve, return".
