White House, congressional Democrats see no deal on shutdown

  • The setting sun illuminates clouds behind the White House during a partial federal shutdown

Trump's Republican Party is in control of both outgoing Congress's chambers.

Over the Christmas holiday, Trump dug in on his promise to secure part of the funding for a wall along the U.S.

Trump, who made the barrier a signature campaign issue, wants $5 billion to build the wall, but Democrats said they are only willing to provide $1.3 billion for border security - not a wall.

Why can't Trump get his budget passed?

And, similar to numerous president's tweets, the comments lacked any information backing up his claim.

"And look, we were elected separately from the president". Nancy Pelosi (D-California), who is supposed to take over as Speaker of the House on January 3, has repeatedly called the wall "immoral, ineffective and expensive".

Matt Schlapp, head of the American Conservative Union and a White House ally, said the standoff won't be any easier to solve with Pelosi presiding over the House of Representatives. Roughly 420,000 workers were deemed essential and are working unpaid, while 380,000 were furloughed.

The president is lying and I have proof. "I think senators should speak out", Toomey said.

But putting aside the most far-right extremists, previous government shutdowns have been wildly unpopular - and Republicans damage their own reputations with the brinkmanship.

Trump ended the session by railing against the Democrats and former FBI director James Comey, whom he sacked in May 2017 in a move he later said stemmed from frustration over the federal investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign Russian interference in the 2016 USA vote. He asserted without evidence: "Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?"

In a nod to the political stakes he's facing, the president said he wants the wall by "election time" in 2020.

This shutdown is the third this year, and this one brings in its wake Trump attacks on the Federal Reserve, a plunging stock market, troop withdrawals from Syria and general upheaval inside the president's administration.

Trump's 39 percent approval rating matches the lowest point of his popularity, in August 2017, when he condemned "many sides" for the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a white nationalist drove a vehicle into a group of protesters, resulting in the death of Heather Heyer, 32, and causing injuries to 19 others.

The biggest sticking point for negotiators is the president's request for more money for the border wall.

Democrats are most likely going to blink first and give into the president's demands, not because they are soft but because you can't negotiate with a kidnapper who doesn't care if all of his hostages die.

"Whenever a president allows the government not to function, it means he's isn't doing his job", he said. Maybe holding America over a cliff with a gun its head is the way to get deals done. "Need to stop Drugs, Human Trafficking, Gang Members & Criminals from coming into our Country. The only one that doesn't want the wall are the Democrats", he added.

White House press spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump would continue refusing to sign "a proposal that does not first prioritise our country's safety and security". Pelosi previously reminded the White House that any attempt to "reprogram" government funds - that is, use resources for a objective other than that which was appropriated - would have to be approved by Congress.
