  • Litter spills out of a public dustbin on the National Mall in Washington as the US government shutdown goes into its third dayMore

Fox News anchor Julie Banderas kicked it off: "If the Republicans don't give what the Democrats want, the shutdown is going to continued until January, then the Democrats take over, then Republicans have no chance of getting the border wall".

800,000 of 2.1 million federal employees have been affected, with nine of 15 government departments being officially de-funded.

The US president insists he won't halt the government shutdown until Congress provides funding for the Mexico wall, and also claims he has the support of many federal workers, who have been furloughed while the standoff continues.

He promised to keep fighting for wall funding.

'Including (expected House of Represetatives leader) Nancy Pelosi, until i fired him, and once I fired him everybody said "Oh why did you fire him, why did you fire him?"

"I'm very concerned that you're holding the federal government hostage for your latest whim - that's a widespread feeling, and many Republicans privately share that concern", Connolly said. Roughly 420,000 workers were deemed essential and are working unpaid, while another 380,000 have been furloughed.

On day five of a partial government shutdown, negotiations among Democrats, Republicans and the White House appear to be going nowhere. "We need safety for our country", Mr. Trump told reporters after meeting with USA service members in Iraq on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Meadows told ABC News that "no substantial progress" has been made since discussions broke down over the weekend. "If this is the hill that the president is going to die on politically, he's in for a rough ride".

Democrats oppose spending money on a wall, preferring instead to pump the dollars into fencing, technology and other means of controlling access to the border.

London’s Gatwick airport shut down over drone sighting
A sighting of two drones flying over Gatwick Airport sparked major security concerns, causing the airport to close their runways. However, the airfield only reopened for a mere 44 minutes before being closed again after a further sighting of the drones .

Trump declined to tell reporters Wednesday what amount of wall funding he would accept to end the shutdown.

"So President Trump, if you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall, plain and simple", Schumer said. I'll call it whatever they want.

Trump acknowledged the impasse has no foreseeable end date, telling reporters he couldn't say when the government would fully reopen.

The shutdown has been playing out against the backdrop of turmoil in the stock market, which is having a roller-coaster week.

The shutdown started Saturday after funding lapsed for nine Cabinet-level departments and dozens of agencies.

The US President did not say how he was hearing from federal workers, excluding those he appointed to their jobs or who work with him in the White House.

Those being furloughed include 52,000 workers at the Internal Revenue Service and almost everyone at NASA. Many national parks across the country have also been closed, and the Internal Revenue Service planned to close taxpayer assistance lines, among other operations, weeks ahead of filing season.

Several hundred thousand U.S. government employees across numerous agencies are working without pay, while others have been sent hom on furlough.
