Ashwin missed the second Test in Perth, where India fell to a 146-run defeat to level the series, and while team management hoped he would recover to take his place in the side the 32-year-old was missing from the starting 11 announced by the country's cricket board (BCCI) on Tuesday.

Hogg backed the decision saying in absence of injured Ravichandran Ashwin, India simply couldn't play Ravindra Jadeja or Kuldeep Yadav for a lack of aid from the pace-friendly pitch.

Shastri also said if Jadeja will be fit, he will play in the next Test match.

"Langer was full of praise for Nathan Lyon who has taken 16 wickets in two Tests, and has been a pivotal member of the attack". According to Shastri, Jadeja arrived in Australia carrying a shoulder injury and not only was he allowed to be a part of the final 13, he bowled regularly in the nets after taking injections and was used as a substitute fielder extensively in the Perth Test.

"The problem with Jaddu (Jadeja) is that he had taken an injection four days into coming to Australia, because of some stiffness in the shoulder and it took a while for that injection to settle down", Shastri said. So when you look at Perth, we felt he was about 70 to 80 percent fit, and we didn't want to risk that in Perth.

"On the eve of any selection meeting, the selection committee is given a fitness report of all the players. We have to be careful before we actually decide on whether he plays or not".

Pandya has made a comeback into the Indian squad, after being ruled out of the first two contests because of a back injury. "Rohit has made a very good improvement but then again we have got to see how he pulls up tomorrow". He looks good as of today.

Dodgers trade Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood to Reds
Three high-profile Dodgers include prized outfielders Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp , along with starting pitcher Alex Wood . Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said following the deal that the Reds aren't done making moves.

"It's a big concern", Shastri said.

India have dropped both their openers - 95 runs between them in eight innings - for the Boxing Day Test. Mayank Agarwal was set to get his debut with Hanuma Vihari moving up the order from his No. 6 station. "I think he's had conversations with the selectors that there's a few things they would like him to work on and Pete is open to that", Paine said. "It's about how strong you are in the mind".

He and Australian counterpart Paine traded a series of barbs during the Perth Test, with Paine even heard on stump microphone asking of Murali Vijay: "I know he's your captain but you can't seriously like him as a bloke".

"For me, what has worked for me is being comfortable where I am playing, not necessarily looking at how hard the wicket is but if you are able to feel comfortable there, you are more or less in control of what you want to do", Kohli said.

"He was fantastic. What is wrong with his behaviour?"

The MCG Boxing Day Test is always an eagerly anticipated occasion, but this year it feels like there is an added edge.
