United Kingdom opposition leader denies calling PM May 'stupid woman'

  • Jeremy Corbyn was shown saying something under his breath

It is unclear whether British lawmakers will approve the divorce agreement that May's government has negotiated with the European Union.

The prime minister's announcement came after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had threatened to table a motion of no confidence in her if she did not set a date for the vote.

Conservative MP Andrea Leadsom then confronted Bercow over reports that he also called Leadsom a 'stupid woman, ' without apologising. To coin the prime minister's earlier phrase, "Oh no he didn't".

They reported that May was berating Juncker for apparently having called her Brexit plans "nebulous".

But one of Mrs May's closest allies said "all options" should remain open if the deal is rejected. But the episode caused an uproar, with Conservative legislators yelling "shame" and "disgraceful". I am though pragmatic and recognise that we were never going to get the easy deal we were promised by some.

Corbyn's remark was captured by television cameras during the question-and-answer session in parliament that British leaders have to endure every Wednesday.

"Everybody in this House, particularly in this 100th year of women getting the vote, should be encouraging women to come into this chamber and to stand in this chamber and should therefore use appropriate language in this chamber when they are referring to female members", she said.

Autopsy set for migrant girl, 7, who died in border custody
Border Patrol agents detain a group of Central American asylum seekers near the U.S. -Mexico border in McAllen, Texas, on June 12. The CBP facility at Antelope Wells had no medical personnel and was completely unsuited to receiving refugees in family groups.

First, the prime minister does continue to believe that immigration can be reduced to "tens of thousands", a fact which could discomfit the home secretary, who repeatedly refused to offer that pledge.

In response to repeated requests to look at the evidence, Mr Bercow said: "I am happy to look at that evidence if that evidence exists".

Twitter was awash with footage of Corbyn allegedly mouthing the slur as May took questions and, towards the end of her session, she was asked by a Tory lawmaker if such language was acceptable - without Corbyn being named.

May postponed a vote in Parliament last week because the deal faced a heavy defeat.

The PM had some well-rehearsed fun with Jeremy Corbyn's recent tactics, and her "behind you" jibe that he should beware of his disgruntled troops struck home.

It brought condemnation from Tory MPs, with party chairman Brandon Lewis urging him to either "apologise or clarify" what he had mouthed.

No-one can really be said to have "won" or "lost" this encounter (except perhaps the Speaker) but for once some useful nuggets of information were exposed.
