Time magazine's 2018 Person of the Year title goes to the "guardians and the war on truth".

Jamal Khashoggi and other murdered or oppressed journalists have been named Time magazine's 2018 Person of the Year.

The Washington Post columnist, who was killed at the hands of Saudi agents in Istanbul, was described by the magazine as a "prolific commentator and critic of Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman".

Instead of choosing a single person like they normally would, TIME Magazine made a decision to choose multiple people - all of those who have either been killed and imprisoned as journalists.

"She has exposed Duterte's propaganda machine, the extrajudicial killings and ... she's been a legal target in the Philippines, now under indictment in what many perceive as retribution for her reporting", he said.

Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo have been imprisoned for almost a year in Myanmar after investigating a massacre of Rohingya Muslims. As well the likes of former U.S. president Barack Obama, civil rights campaigner Martin Luther King Jr and former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the magazine has also awarded influential events and people in the headlines for the wrong reasons, such as Ebola, Adolf Hitler, 9/11 and Ayatollah Khomeini.

The award seeks to recognise an individual or group of people "who most influenced the news and the world - for better or for worse - during the past year". In September, each were sentenced to seven years in prison.

Members of staff at The Capital Gazette were the victims of a shooting earlier in America, earlier this year, where five members of staff were killed.

Other covers included the murdered journalists at the Capitol Gazette, the imprisoned Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo in Myanma and Maria Ressa, who has been harassed by Philippine President Duarte after critical reporting.

The US president, who was competing for the second time after 2016, was second runner-up, followed by special prosecutor Robert Mueller.

Detained Reuters journalist Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo arrive at Insein court in Yangon, Myanmar.

Meghan Markle and Ryan Coogler have been named to Time's Person of the Year shortlist. The two journalists claim they were framed in an effort to stop them from writing about a massacre in Rakhine State reportedly associated with state security forces, TIME reports.
