When they arrived 90 minutes later, the girl wasn't breathing. A judge overseeing that lawsuit has ordered the agency's Tucson sector, which patrols much of the Arizona-Mexico border, to provide blankets and mats to sleep on and to regularly turn over surveillance footage from inside the cells.

Less than nine hours later, the girl began to have seizures.

Emergency medical technicians discovered her fever was 105.7 degrees Fahrenheit (40.9 degrees Celsius). She was flown to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where she later died. An initial report by the hospital said she passed away due to sepsis shock.

The chain of circumstances here is damning.

U.S. Border Patrol agents detain a group of Central American asylum seekers near the U.S. -Mexico border in McAllen, Texas, on June 12.

The CBP facility at Antelope Wells had no medical personnel and was completely unsuited to receiving refugees in family groups.

Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee this week, CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said that children were not targeted and that he thought it was "remarkable that agents were able to resolve the situation without any serious injuries or a breach of the border".

Last month, USA border agents used tear gas on a crowd of migrants, including children, trying to cross the border. Juarez's attorney, R. Stanton Jones, said that the child developed a respiratory infection at the facility because it did not have proper conditions to house a toddler.

It's not clear whether Jackeline ate or drank anything while in custody. They turned themselves in on December 6, immigration officials said.

The ACLU has responded to news of this death, tweeting, "This is a horrific, indefensible tragedy".

"We gave immediate care", Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told Fox News in an interview Friday morning, defending her agents' handling.

'We'll continue to look into the situation, but again, I can not stress enough how unsafe this journey when migrants choose to come here illegally, ' she said.

Yet many people on social media unleashed a barrage of criticism not towards "inhuman" immigration authorities and 'cruel' Donald Trump, but against the child's parents.

The executive director of trhe ACLU in New Mexico, Peter Simonson, issued a statement saying, "Jailing children and allowing them to die on our watch does not make America great".

What's worse is that it is far from the first death at the hands of DHS.

Some even demanded her father to be charged with child neglect.

The father is a native speaker of a Mayan Indian language.

A group of migrants are arrested at the border in Tijuana on December 2 by US Border Patrol Agents.

The death of Jackeline Caal prompted a flood of hypocritical statements from Democratic Party politicians.

A seven year-old migrant girl who had not eaten any food or drank any water for days died hours after being detained at the U.S. border. "What's happening at our borders is a humanitarian crisis". Both groups - extremely large by CBP standards - mostly consisted of families and children, according to the agency.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said, "Unfortunately, despite our best efforts and the best efforts of the medical team treating the child, we were unable to stop this tragedy from occurring".
