Trump expected to pick State spokeswoman for UN ambassador

  • Trump to name Heather Nauert as next U.S. ambassador to the U.N.

WASHINGTON President Donald Trump is expected to nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert to be the next US ambassador to the United Nations.

She'll also take up the administration's efforts to defend Israel at the United Nations and counter what Haley called the organization's bias against the Jewish state.

Heather Nauert, who earlier this year had been considered a possible successor to White House spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders, gained experience on diplomacy by working at the State Department, but she lacks the political and policy credentials of Ms Haley, who is a former governor of SC.

Haley surprised White House officials in October when she said she would resign by the end of year, citing the need for a break after two terms as governor and two years at the UN.

Before this, she worked as an ABC News correspondent and as an anchor on the Fox News program, Fox and Friends. Trump is one of the show's biggest fans, and he often finds inspiration in the hosts' remarks as topics for his morning tweets.

White House contradicts Trump, says there's no deal with China
Trump tweeted: " China has agreed to reduce and remove tariffs on cars coming into China from the U.S. now the tariff is 40%". He then referred to his plan for escalating 10% duties on Chinese imports to 25%, tweeting: "Remember I am a Tariff Man ".

Nauert's appointment was first reported by Bloomberg.

She also served as Acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs between March and October 2017. Trump had already confirmed that Nauert was a "very serious consideration" in early November. Trump is expected to announce the nomination on Friday. She will have to be confirmed by the Senate to become ambassador to the United Nations.

That means Nauert would wield less clout than her predecessor, both at the United Nations and within the administration, and as a result, would pose nowhere near the challenge to national security adviser John Bolton, White House chief of staff John Kelly or Pompeo. Under her tenure, the USA pulled out of UNESCO and the Human Rights Council.

Nauert, left, and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

Haley took a particularly forceful posture against Russian Federation, assailing the Kremlin at United Nations security council meetings over its aggression in Ukraine and support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, even as Trump remained reluctant to criticize Vladimir Putin.
