  • US Marine aircraft suffer 'mishap' off Japanese coast, search-and-rescue underway

In June, a U.S. Air Force F-15 fighter jet crashed in waters off Okinawa Prefecture during a routine training mission.

Reports on Twitter indicate that two US military aircraft have crashed during a midair refueling operation off Iwakuni, Japan.

The Marine Corps tweeted that the incident occurred at about 02:00 on Thursday (17:00 GMT Wednesday).

Japanese search-and-rescue aircraft immediately responded to the emergency, the Marine Corps statement said. Very few details have been made public in the initial Corps news release.

The US military has also experienced difficulties with its Osprey helicopters, with several emergency landings, a deadly crash and a piece of the chopper falling on the grounds of a Japanese school. A Japanese government official said the person, rescued by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, is in a stable condition. When pilots want to refuel, they steer a boom attached to the front of their aircraft into a drogue receptacle that looks like a basket on the end of the KC-130's refueling hose, he said.

The crash is the latest in recent series of accidents involving the US military deployed to and near Japan. A series of emergency landings and parts falling from US military aircraft have highlighted safety concerns.

The other plane was apparently a KC-130, an extended-range tanker refuelling aircraft.
