Mueller Recommends No Prison Time For Flynn After His 'Substantial' Help

Flynn was a close adviser to Trump during the campaign - and famously led a "lock her up" Hillary Clinton chant at the Republican National Convention.

Special counsel Mueller is expected to file a sentencing memo today for Michael Flynn and sentencing memos for Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort in the coming days.

The sentencing of Flynn, a retired United States army lieutenant general, was delayed four times after Mueller repeatedly said he needed more time "due to the status of the investigation" - an indication that he wanted to protect sensitive information.

When he pleaded guilty past year, Flynn admitted to lying during an Federal Bureau of Investigation interview about the content of his conversations with Sergey Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the U.S. In late 2016, the two allegedly spoke about the US sanctions imposed on Russian Federation.

But Flynn has largely remained out of the public eye, appearing only a handful of times in media interviews or campaign events, and he has strictly avoided criticizing the Mueller probe despite widespread encouragement from his supporters to go on the offensive.

According to memos kept by former FBI Director James Comey, Trump allegedly tried to protect Flynn at the time, calling him a "good guy" and asking Comey to dismiss the investigation into Flynn's false statements.

Flynn became the first high-ranking Trump associate to agree to cooperate with the special counsel's prove when he pleaded guilty on December 1, 2017. Trump responded to Cohen's lawyers' request for prison "time served" by tweeting that Cohen deserves "a full and complete sentence".

Whatever it is that Flynn said, it's clear that Mueller liked it.

Since special counsel Robert Mueller opened the probe into Russian Federation interference in the 2016 presidential election last May, five people who worked for President Donald Trump's businesses or his presidential campaign have pleaded guilty to federal charges.

President Donald Trump on Monday called for his former personal attorney and "fixer" Michael Cohen to receive a "long prison term", while suggesting his former employee's wife and father-in-law also committed crimes. Stone told ABC News on Sunday he would not testify against Trump and has not discussed a pardon with the president.

Cohen admitted he lied to Congress when he said efforts to pursue the Moscow real estate ended in January 2016, when they actually continued until June 2016, after Trump had clinched the Republican presidential nomination.

The Mueller-Cohen deal also involves cooperation with federal prosecutors.

President Donald Trump passed Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford, left, and National Security Adviser Michael Flynn as he arrives via Air Force One at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, Feb. 6, 2017. Van der Zwaan received a 30-day sentence and Papadopoulos got a 14-day sentence.
