Mississippians Vote in High-Stakes Senate Runoff

  • Nooses found outside Mississippi legislature day before Senate vote

The comments by Hyde-Smith, who is white, made Mississippi's history of racist lynchings a theme of the runoff and spurred many black voters to return to the polls Tuesday where she faced Democrat Mike Espy.

President Donald Trump brought back the playbook he used during the leadup to the midterm elections, warning of the dangers of illegal immigration and painting Democrats as radical "socialists", as he returned to the campaign trail Monday to try to keep a Mississippi Senate seat in GOP hands.

She said the hanging remark was an "exaggerated expression of regard" for the supporter, but the remarks drew sharp criticism in a state with a 38 per cent black population.

"We can't afford a senator who embarrasses us and reinforces the stereotypes we've worked so hard to overcome", one ad for the Democrat said. They say surveys have consistently shown her with a lead ranging from the mid-single digits to the low double digits.

Hyde-Smith has campaigned as an unwavering supporter of President Trump, who campaigned with her Monday, praising her at a rally in the northeastern MS city of Tupelo for voting to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Tuesday's victor will serve the last two of Cochran's six-year term.

Particularly significant was his praise for former Senator Thad Cochran, the longtime Republican officeholder who retired early this year.

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence launched a rescue mission in MS for a Republican candidate on the eve of a run-off election for the US Senate, with Democrats hoping to win a seat in the state for the first time since 1982. The league cut the check for Hyde-Smith's campaign on November 12 or 13, two sources told Yahoo Sports - a day or two after the lynching comments were first made public by the Jackson Free Press.

Buckeye blitz: No. 10 Ohio State blows out No. 4 MI
Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State win; Alabama loses . "I'm going to be very hard on everybody this week", Meyer promised. Maybe most satisfying of all, Ohio State has won 14 of the last 15 meetings against the team it loves to beat the most.

Investigators are trying to find out who hung seven nooses in trees outside the MS legislature early on Monday, a day before a US Senate vote that has focused attention on the state's history of racist violence.

At the first of two Election Eve rallies President Trump encouraged the crowd in Tupelo to "get out" and vote in Tuesday's runoff election.

Mississippi Democrats hope to recreate the coalition that propelled Democrat Doug Jones to a Senate victory in neighboring Alabama previous year by energizing black voters, particularly women, and winning support from white swing voters. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) website says that between 1882 and 1968, there were 4,743 lynchings in the United States, and that almost 73 percent of the victims were black. "I have stood up for you and you know I will continue to stand up for the conservative values of MS". Cindy Hyde-Smith, who is white, and Democrat Mike Espy, who is black. "They're not putting their best in there, right?" he said.

Such donations have come under fire due to Hyde-Smith's recent comments and actions making jokes out of lynchings and glorifying Confederate history.

Espy resigned the Cabinet post in 1994 amid a special counsel investigation that accused him of improperly accepting gifts. And, given that Hyde-Smith was in the process of showing some pretty ugly true colors at the time, Major League Baseball should not have done it.

He said it would be "unfair" to make any connection between the items and Hyde-Smith.

Espy said he refused to accept plea deals because, "I was so not guilty, I was innocent". "I wish we could be like Alabama who had enough with Roy Moore, you know".
