Nancy Pelosi nominated by Democrats to be next House speaker

29 November, 2018, 07:53 | Author: Ted Wilson
  • Nancy Pelosi won the House Democratic Caucus vote to secure her nomination as speaker. She still must win a vote on the House

Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, has joined eight of his fellow Problem Solvers Caucus members in issuing a set of demands to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi: Do your part to ease the partisanship rampant in Congress, or risk losing our votes in your bid for speaker of the House.

That doesn't mean she won't become speaker.

Jeffries' election and Pelosi's politicking came as Democrats marched through a marathon day of speeches and secret balloting behind closed doors at the Capitol that is their first official chance to put a stamp on a new era of Democratic leadership.

Democrats voted "overwhelmingly" to nominate Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for Speaker of the House Wednesday afternoon, clearing away any suspicion that an "insurgency" among Democrats might derail the ancient California Democratic representative's plans to return to the helm of her party.

Pelosi has reached an agreement a bipartisan group whose nine Democratic members were withholding their support as they pushed for rules changes to allow a more open legislative process. Joe Cunningham of SC and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia are among those who said they'd vote against Pelosi on the House floor. The full House will vote on the speaker January 3.

Heading into the internal vote, Pelosi had faced the most serious challenge of her leadership tenure.

Storm warning for Wednesday and Thursday with winds up to 50 m/second
Although mild, it will become very windy everywhere, with gales or severe gales affecting much of the north and west. MET Eireann have predicted more heavy rain and strong winds with gusts reaching up to 130km/h for Wednesday.

A top priority for Clark is helping the incoming freshmen -many of whom have never held elected office - be effective and to help equip them to run as strong incumbents in two years.

That is the exact number of House Democrats who signed the November 19th anti-Pelosi letter - and one of those, Brian Higgins, has since recanted and said he would support her.

But Pelosi appears to have had some success winning over other skeptical Democrats: Recently, a group of 16 Democrats signed a letter saying they opposed Pelosi, but several have since dropped off the list and announced support for her. She has, on multiple occasions, noted that she has always been an advocate for single payer healthcare in the past, and even advocated for California to pass its own version of Medicare for All, although she failed to endorse the bill that died in our state legislature. "We remain united behind our goal of new leadership and we intend to vote against Leader Pelosi in Caucus and on the Floor of the House". She already made a deal with the so-called Problem Solvers Caucus ― a bipartisan group of lawmakers who wanted specific rules changes to open up Congress ― even though that group had already vowed to not support Pelosi if she didn't agree to their rule changes, in writing, by a deadline of almost two weeks ago.

But, as the 32 votes against Pelosi indicate, her work isn't done. With so little time left, Hayes said, "there are no other options".

The group sent Pelosi a letter on November 13 outlining their terms and have since kept up the pressure on Pelosi. That meeting will be the latest in a series of private sessions she has held in recent days, in person and over the phone, to wear down her critics and win support from her detractors.

She raised millions of dollars for candidates and kept Democrats focused on their main hot-button issue on the campaign trail: health care.
