Mexico Says Migrants Have Right To Seek US Asylum, Rejects Closing Border

  • A Central American migrant is stopped by U.S. agents who order him to go back to the Mexican side of the border after a group of migrants got past Mexican police at the Chaparral crossing in Tijuana Mexico Sunday Nov. 25 2018 at the border with San

Some 5,600 asylum-seekers, forming the so-called migrant caravan which has travelled across Central America during October and November, reached the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali near the United States border last week.

But while some are giving up their dream, others are just arriving, further stretching resources at makeshift camps.

Now, Sinclair - which covers roughly 40 percent of American households, many in the South and Midwest - is at it again. On one hand, he said he is frustrated with those who are potentially putting children in harm's way by bringing them to the border not knowing what they will face. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement falls under the umbrella of DHS. These included 29 cases in which tear gas was used and 43 incidents of pepper spray.

Customs and Border Protection officials said protesters then pushed past the Mexican police barricade, and as they attempted to cross the United States border, CBP officials used tear gas to disperse the group - which included families with young children.

The migrants are mostly fleeing poverty and violence in Central America's "Northern Triangle" - El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

When asked what would help in securing the border, Hastings said, in light of Sunday's events, that infrastructure would have been useful.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said federal and local authorities stopped the migrants from crossing the border illegally.

Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott told CNN that "numerous" migrants - mainly men - had made it across, however, and 42 of them were arrested. They saw the clash and official response as hurting their chances of reaching the U.S. Mexico's National Migration Institute reported that 98 migrants were being deported after trying to breach the U.S. border.

US Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said the administration's concerns about the caravan "were borne out and on fully display" Sunday. "Being in Mexico does not mean they lose their ability, their right to request asylum". Democratic leaders - including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) - have said they would approve $1.6 billion for the wall, placing the two sides billions of dollars apart as the lame-duck session begins.

Border Patrol agents launched pepper spray balls in addition to tear gas in what officials said were on-the-spot decisions made by agents.

But he said the migrants have a right to request USA asylum, and Mexico has repeatedly refused US requests to force them to seek refuge there instead.

"[CBP] effectively managed an extremely unsafe situation involving over 1,000 individuals who sought to enter the U.S. unlawfully in large groups".

Of the 6,062 total in Tijuana, according to officials, 3,877 men are men, 1,127 are women and 1,058 are children.

Tyler Q. Houlton, spokesman for Homeland Security pushed back on accusations that Border Patrol agents targeted women and children with the tear gas, but said people who join a violent mob trying to break through the border are going to see "unintended consequences".

"I don't want them to stay", she says in Spanish, "because they're rebellious, they're people who've only come to create conflict".

"People here are pretty dug in", said Rubio, a Republican.

"In that particular area, we have old landing mat fence, which was from the 1990s era and was quickly torn apart.by several of the subjects there, who were also throwing rocks and projectiles at our agents", he said.
