General Motors to close seven factories globally

  • Trump backs potential new auto import tariffs

But we will all together get the point across to General Motors. He continued, "We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies", including for electric cars.

GM isn't the first to abandon much of the vehicle market. GM has said sagging demand for small cars largely prompted the cuts.

General Motors announced Monday it will cease production of the Chevy Cruze in early 2019 - the only vehicle its Lordstown plant produces.

Overall GM said the shake-up would lead to cost savings of around £4.7 billion by 2020.

Those cuts are in addition to $6.5 billion that the company has announced by the end of this year.

The president said that he was "very tough" with GM CEO Mary Barra when speaking with her after the announcement.

But its outlook is bleak after GM announced production of the Chevy Cruze would stop in March, halting work at the assembly plant that already had lost two shifts and 3,000 union jobs since the beginning of a year ago.

The reductions could ripple through auto parts suppliers such as Aptiv and Magna International, Michaeli said.

Snowstorm batters parts of Midwest, 100s of flights cancelled
The Chicago area was slammed with up to 30 centimetres of wet snow, and whiteout conditions stalled commuter traffic on the roads. Strong winds and snow were expected to create blizzard conditions across much of Nebraska and parts of Kansas, Iowa and Missouri.

Many of those who will lose jobs are now working on conventional cars with internal combustion engines.

While GM, and other auto companies, have spoken out against rising production costs caused by the Trump administration's protectionist tariffs, a spokeswoman for the company told TheBlaze that the layoffs and plant closures "are being made as part of our ongoing transformation and are not related to recent trade or tariff decisions". As a manager, she is looking downright cold-looded.

The US automaker explained its decision as a response to a slowdown in new-car sales, as well as to consumers shifting toward pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles.

GM has offered buyouts to 18,000 retirement-eligible workers with a dozen or more years of service.

"Actions are being taken to reduce salaried and salaried contract staff by 15 per cent, which includes 25 per cent fewer executives to streamline decision making". He says he told the company that the USA has done a lot for GM and that if its cars aren't selling, the company needs to produce ones that will.

As recently as 2012, passenger cars made up more than 50 percent of all US new vehicle sales. The automaker says the decision to reduce American production has to do with reduced demand for cars like the Chevrolet Cruze, which is built at the OH plant, and an overall strategic shift towards more popular crossover and SUV models. LaCrosse and Volt production will end March 1, while CT6 and Impala production would stop June 1.

"General Motors decision today to stop production at the Lordstown, Ohio, and Hamtramck, Michigan, assembly plants will idle thousands of workers, and will not go unchallenged by the UAW", Terry Dittes, UAW Vice President in charge of negotiations with GM, said. The Baltimore Operations plant will stop building transmissions, and likewise the Warren Transmission Operations site in MI.

Keeping open a plant slated for closure is not without precedent for GM. "They are not closing our damn plant without one hell of a fight".
