Alexander Zverev underlined his burgeoning potential by defeating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in successive days to clinch the biggest title of his career at the ATP Finals.

Zverev, billed as the player most likely to lead the sport into a new golden era once the holy trinity of Roger Federer, Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have hung up their rackets, took full advantage of an off-key Serb to win 6-4 6-3.

Turning to Djokovic, he said: "I want to congratulate you for the second half of this year". "I played very well in the group stage against Sascha (Zverev) but I don't think he was close to his best".

For years we have been saying tennis needs new faces and strong new players - and he has proved he is the best of the next generation.

Throughout the tournament Djokovic has dominated with his serve, which hasn't been broken all week.

The dominant Djokovic continued in the same vein in the second set, breaking Anderson in the first and fifth games to move into touching distance of a place in the final. But he admitted he was surprised to have served more aces in the semi-final than his big-serving opponent. "That stat helps the confidence".

And the 14-time grand slam victor jokingly conceded he had been met with a far sterner challenge in the final.

But at 4-4 he wavered as he yanked an edgy forehand halfway up the net to give Zverev the chance to serve for the set.

Facebook and Instagram down reports from across the world
Facebook not working for you? Facebook's Messenger app is reportedly down around the world on both desktop and mobile. This is the second time this month users of the platform reported the site not operating at its full potential.

Zverev became the first German champion since Boris Becker won in Frankfurt in 1995.

"You deserve to win". That was maybe part of the reaction.

'Here I am having actually a pretty good season physically, as well, won another, yes, you can see it as a very, very positive season'. "Even though it appears that everything is working, if it works, that you just need to maintain it, but sometimes it's really just things vary and you have to deal with these particular situations".

Federer described it as a "big call" but said Zverev was not to blame.

The following set was underway in a much similar path, as both players did quite well on their serves, before Federer registered the only break throughout the match in the 12th game to force a decider at 7-5.

Four-time victor Novak Djokovic edged Swiss veteran Roger Federer in full sets in a spotlight semifinal duel to set up his encounter against unseeded Russian Karen Khachanov at the ATP Paris Masters here on Saturday.

But the frustrated 20-time Grand Slam victor could not consolidate his position, losing the next game as Zverev levelled at 2-2.

Federer tried to accept as most as possible with the smile the ball boy's mistake during the 4-3 point on the second set tie-break.
