"The document referenced in the Times story regarding the anti-Facebook organization's potential funding sources was entirely factual and based on public records, including public statements by one of its organizers about receiving funding from Mr. Soros' foundation", the Definers spokesperson said. So is Sheryl Sandberg. The reports come as Facebook grapples with challenge after challenge, ranging from fake news to Facebook's role in elections interference, hate speech and incitement to violence in the U.S., Myanmar, India and elsewhere. According to her, looking into the Russian activity without approval had left the company exposed legally.

The president of George Soros' foundation blasted Facebook FB executives over allegations that the company had funded a Republican-opposition research firm to discredit Soros in part by leveraging anti-Semitic sentiment toward the billionaire liberal donor. Among the revelations was that Facebook hired an opposition-research firm that uses a right-leaning news site to go after clients' "enemies", and that the company previously tried to downplay the existence of Russian meddling on the platform.

Facebook chief executive officer and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg said during a call with reporters Thursday that the company is changing how it makes decisions on what content to remove.

Before and since this month's midterm elections, which saw the Democrats retake control of the House of Representatives, Facebook has shut down dozens of accounts on its own platform and on Instagram which it said were aimed at influencing the vote.

Facebook likes to say it was "too slow" to address the problems it's now grappling with, including how Russian Federation set out to manipulate conversation on the social network in the lead-up to the 2016 election.

"Someone on our comms team must have hired them", he continued, claiming Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg was also unaware of the partnership.

Facebook employs thousands of people to review posts, photos, comments and videos for violations.

According to Facebook, the Times report incorrectly suggested "that we ever asked Definers to pay for or write articles on Facebook's behalf - or to spread misinformation". It encouraged journalists to look into links between Mr Soros and groups such as "Freedom from Facebook", a lobby firm that had emerged to campaign against Facebook.

"The intention was to demonstrate that it was not simply a spontaneous grassroots campaign, as it claimed, but supported by a well-known critic of our company", Facebook said.

In its statement, Facebook said it had ended its contract with Definers as of Wednesday night.

Still, supporters of Soros are not happy, citing the rising anti-Semitism against the megadonor and philanthropist. "To now learn that you are active in promoting these distortions is beyond the pale".

A separate advisor to Soros is reportedly calling for Facebook to investigate the company's PR and lobbying work.

However, Definers says it never sought to smear Soros.

It also chose Thursday to publish its latest note from Mark Zuckerberg about some of the "toughest issues" Facebook is addressing.
