Number of missing in California fire doubles to more than 600

At a shelter set in a church in nearby Oroville, a bulletin board was plastered with dozens of photos of missing people, along with messages and phone numbers. "There are more evacuees, more people running out of money for hotels".

The number of people unaccounted for jumped dramatically to 631 people, up from 130 on Wednesday evening.

The announcement came Thursday as authorities continued to search the devastated town of Paradise for human remains.

Long said Paradise was looking at a "total rebuild", with most homes, businesses and infrastructure destroyed.

The Camp Fire that's burning in Butte County is the deadliest wildfire in California state history. Scientists largely attribute the devastating blazes to climate change which has caused a prolonged drought in the state.

It is now 40 percent contained, fire officials said.
