"Behold the political slaughter dealt to leaders of the occupation who aren't capable of dealing with Gaza", it said in a statement.

Less than a day after Likud supporters demonstrated against Netanyahu in the southern city of Sderot, demanding harsher retaliation in Gaza after over 400 rockets were launched from the Strip into Israel, Liberman is now relying on public resentment toward the prime minister's "lenient" response - which had the support of all the heads of the security establishment. "In my opinion, even if we kill 40,000 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists, it is not worth losing one Israeli life".

"Egypt's efforts have been able to achieve a ceasefire between the resistance and the Zionist enemy", the statement by the Gaza groups said.

Two of the Palestinian casualties were reportedly farmers, and the other five were militants.

The conflict began on Sunday, when Israeli special forces entered the town of Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip.

Demonstrators each week have approach the border fence, throwing firebombs, grenades and burning tires at Israeli troops.

Before Sunday's raid, Egyptian and United Nations mediators had made progress in reducing tensions.
