Officials and relatives held out hope that many of those unaccounted for were safe and simply had no cellphones or other ways to contact loved ones. At least 110 people are still missing.

More than 8,000 firefighters have been battling the three large wildfires burning across almost 400 square miles of northern and southern California, with out-of-state crews arriving to help.

Wildfires continued to tear through Northern and Southern California on Monday, where firefighters were at the mercy of dry air and whipping winds fanning the deadly blazes.

He also took to Instagram to salute the bravery of firefighters battling the blaze, writing: "Returned to my house in Malibu after evacuating".

Singer Robin Thicke's home in the area also burned down.

"In some cases, the only remains we are able to recover are bones or bone fragments", Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea told reporters. Authorities said they were bringing in cadaver dogs, two portable morgue units from the military and an additional 160 search and rescue personnel to help find human remains.

The largest inferno - the so-called "Camp Fire" in the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains - has destroyed 6,700 homes, business and other buildings in the town of Paradise, effectively wiping it off the map.

The latter fire has spread across 85,000 acres and only 15% of it is contained.

The Hollywood actor is one of many celebrities who were forced to evacuate after the fast-moving fires were unable to be contained, leaving at least 23 dead.

Six more people were confirmed killed in the Camp Fire in the north of the state, taking the toll there to 29.

The Republican president has previously blamed California officials for fires and threatened to withhold funding, saying the state should do more to remove rotten trees and other debris that fuel blazes. They are going to blow for the next three days.

SoCal Edison said the report was submitted out of an abundance of caution although there was no indication from fire officials that its equipment may have been involved.

This fire season follows a particularly deadly set of California wildfires a year ago.
