  • Mourners hold vigils for California shooting victims

The 54-year-old was shot and killed by gunman Ian David Long after storming the bar at around 11.20pm on Wednesday in an attempt to save innocent lives.

Authorities have not determined a motive for Wednesday night's rampage at the Borderline Bar and Grill.

This 2017 photo from the California Department of Motor Vehicles shows Ian David Long.

He reportedly turned the gun on himself as scores of police officers closed in.

Dean was a close friend of one of the shooting victims, Sgt. Ron Helus, who died in the line of duty.

He said the death toll may have been even higher were it not for Sgt Helus' bravery.

The veteran officer, who had served on the force for 29 years and was due to retire in 2019, told her he needed to rush to the scene at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California.

"My son was in Las Vegas with a lot of his friends and he came home", she said. "Fact is I had no reason to do it, and I just thought.(exploitive), life is boring so why not?"

Whether it's PTSD, high school bullying, or mentally disturbed... it all comes back to us needing to put a much stronger emphasis on mental health and gun control. A gunman shooting from the 32nd floor of a hotel and casino with high power weapons killed 58 people. She was appalled that such bloodshed had come to her community. "You're always overanalyzing people, trying to figure out if something were to go down, 'What would I do?"' Kelly said Borderline had become a safe haven for dozens of Vegas survivors: "It is our home". I want gun control.

Long grew up in Thousand Oaks and several people who knew him described him in disturbing terms.

She could often hear him yelling and cursing, but several months ago unusually loud banging and shouting prompted her husband to call authorities.

Long's neighbor Richard Berge, who takes care of Long's mother's dogs, told Reuters that Long was "raving hell in the house, you know, kicking holes in the walls and stuff".

"Being together as a family, that's all we can do to cope with what has happened", Brianna Shelley, who survived the shooting, told FOX40.

About 18 months ago, Don and Effie MacLeod heard "an terrible argument" and what he believes was a gunshot from the Longs' property.

Asked what made him decide to go back and help others, he added: 'Instinct, that's all that I could do. "We just learned that our niece Alaina was one of the victims of last night's shooting at Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks", Mowry-Housley and her husband stated via their joint representative in a statement to USA Today.

The blaze broke out on Thursday northeast of the town located about 40 miles (64 km) north of downtown Los Angeles.

At least one woman held a large American flag as the somber procession passed.

Survivors from the shooting said he looked "like he knew what he was doing" as he repeatedly fired his legally purchased Glock.45 handgun. Associated Press writers Rebecca Boone in Boise, Idaho, and Christopher Weber in Thousand Oaks, contributed.
