After the altercation, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders announced that Acosta's press pass would be suspended, calling his conduct "absolutely unacceptable".

"That's enough, that's enough", the president said, before telling Mr Acosta to sit down and to put down his microphone.

Trump then insulted Acosta's professionalism and his character.

After the exchange, CNN, through its public relations department's Twitter feed, said Trump's attacks on the press have gone too far.

"Obviously I don't think anybody should have-any young woman, particularly-should have somebody swiping away at them and grabbing the microphone back", she added.

Trump on Syria strikes: 'Mission Accomplished!' Acosta said the allegation that he had done so was a "lie," and partisan divides emerged online over whether he had acted appropriately and if the White House's response was proportional.

"Sources with direct knowledge tell Jonathan Swan that since the earliest days of his presidency, Trump has mused about revoking press credentials for reporters who infuriate him", Axios reports.

Twitter users broke down the clip Sanders shared, comparing it with other clips of the incident captured by news cameras, turning it into something akin to 2018's Zapruder film. "We do have to stick together, but Jim Acosta makes it awfully hard to have journalistic solidarity in something like this".

The White House's treatment of Acosta drew wide rebuke from press freedom and journalism organizations.

Acosta took to social media, complaining that the U.S. Secret Service had asked for his credentials to enter the White House.

The White House had not commented on the video at the time of writing. "We stand by our statement". "The video is clear, he did", she said in a statement on November 8.

It was the latest in a long history of fiery run-ins between the mercurial Republican leader and Acosta. Acosta asked, as he pressed Trump on the migrant caravan. "But they have to come in legally", Trump said. "That is not an invasion". He said that "I can do something fantastic, and they make it look not good". "You run CNN, and if you did it well, your ratings would be higher", Trump said.

A staff member tried to take his microphone during the exchange.

Waving his finger, Mr Trump berated him.

"I tell you what, CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them".

During a news conference that morning, President Donald Trump called Acosta a "rude, bad person" as Acosta challenged the president's claims about Central American refugees fleeing to the U.S. You shouldn't be working for CNN.
