  • Christopher Watts Arraignment Hearing in Murder Of Wife And Children

A Colorado man has avoided the death penalty for killing his pregnant wife and two young daughters in a case with North Carolina connections.

In exchange for Chris Watts' guilty plea, the death penalty will not be considered, the Weld County District Attorney's office said.

After his pregnant wife and two daughters disappeared, Watts stood on his porch in Colorado and told reporters how much he missed them.

Some speculate Watts murdered his daughters before turning on his wife of six years when she returned from a business trip.

Prosecutors said a possible death penalty was dropped with the agreement of victims' family members.

While both Rourke and CBI Director John Camper said they hope this provides some closure and sense of justice, they also recognized that nothing that happens in the courtroom can fix what happened in the Watts' Frederick home in August. But he said: "I know that will never be fully realized, because the tragedy that sits before us today is the loss of four handsome lives".

Watts could face three consecutive life sentences.

However, in a second interview with police, Watts told police he looked at the baby monitor screen and saw Shanann strangling their daughter Celeste and that he saw their older daughter, Bella, blue and "sprawled" out on her bed, according to the affidavit.

Binkley, a senior with an English and German double major, was from Dunwoody, a suburb of Georgia, according to the Miami Herald . Representative Ron DeSantis accusing him of being weak on crime. "No act of gun violence is acceptable", he wrote on Twitter .

Watts said in court he is satisfied with his defense representation and is knowingly accepting this plead deal.

"That about as firmly as she could have said it to me", Rourke said.

Watts claimed in an interview that his 34-year-old partner killed the girls, Celeste and Bella, after learning that he wanted a divorce. "I don't want to be in the position to make that choice to take his, '" Rourke said.

Watts' family had all flown out to Colorado in order to be in court today to support him. Police have said Watts then drove their bodies to an oil site owned by his former employer. The three bodies were found on property near Roggen owned by Anadarko Petroleum Co., where Watts worked as an operator until August 15. "The spotlight shines directly where it belongs: On him".

"The spotlight that he tried to shine on Shanann - falsely, incorrectly and frankly a flat-out lie - has been corrected", Rourke said.

Asked if a motive has been determined in the case, Rourke said that investigators believe they have a "partial motive" and Rourke said he would have more to say about that following the sentencing, which is scheduled for November 19.

Law enforcement believe they know the motive behind the murders, as well, and Rourke said he might speak about it after the sentencing.
