Democrats capture US House majority in rebuke to Trump

With Democrats on the brink of winning the House, reclaiming the speaker's gavel could be Pelosi's last act, one she intends to use to restore the power of the office after GOP Speaker Paul Ryan's retirement. The president, in an earlier tweet, weighed in on the midterm results, overlooking the Democratic pickups in the House and writing: "Tremendous success tonight". "Thank you to all!" Democrats were gaining speed in their quest for the House, which would give them the ability to launch investigations into the president and stymie his agenda. Sweeping corporate tax cuts passed by the Republicans past year have supercharged earnings growth.

It was a different story in the 100-member US Senate, where Republicans retained their control, US networks projected. They held onto seats in the South, Midwest and West and ensured at least a 51-49 Senate, the same margin by which they now run the chamber. House Democrats are set to hold their leadership elections the week after Thanksgiving.

In the Senate, Republican Mike Braun captured incumbent Joe Donnelly's seat in IN, and Republican Kevin Cramer beat incumbent Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, marking disappointment for the Democrats.

Trump called Pelosi, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and several of the Republican winners.

In the Senate, where Republicans were heavily favored to keep control heading into yesterday's voting, Republican Mike Braun captured incumbent Joe Donnelly's seat in IN and Republican Kevin Cramer beat incumbent Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota. Joe Donnelly in Indiana. Claire McCaskill in Missouri and Attorney General Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray in the race for OH governor.

Democrats have been widely expected to pick up the seats needed to wrest control of the chamber from President Donald Trump's Republicans, who were expected to maintain control of the Senate.

Midterms always go badly for the party with the president in the White House.

It wasn't long before Streisand revealed how she doesn't drive much, and once accidentally drove onto the up ramp of a highway. In a twist on the usual format, Streisand picked up Corden in her vehicle and it was she who drove through the whole segment.

A record number of American voters are participating in one of the most divisive and crucial midterm elections in recent history, widely considered a referendum on President Trump's policies and fiery rhetoric.

They include Rashida Tlaib in Michigan's District 13, the first Muslim woman elected to Congress; Omar Ilhan, the Somali-American victor in Minnesota's District 5; Ayanna Pressley, who won her uncontested House race in Massachusetts' District 7 on Tuesday; and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whose primary upset over a 10-term incumbent paved her way to victory in New York's 14th. Some high profile senators are expected to be among that growing pool of candidates in the Democratic presidential primary.

The good news for the country and the world is that Trump will now finally face serious pushback on some of his most outrageous policies and that the nightmare scenario of the GOP retaining both chambers of Congress has been averted. These voters stuck by Mr Trump in 2016, but they deserted his party in droves this year. But the president received negative marks from voters on temperament and trustworthiness.

Trump's scorched-earth campaigning came to define the 2018 campaign. Heitkamp was hurt late in her campaign by an ad that mistakenly named some women as victims of sexual abuse.

Sending thousands of troops to the US-Mexico border to counter a migrant "invasion", questioning the validity of birthright citizenship, and spreading stories of scandalous murders by undocumented immigrants: Trump and his Republicans are making immigration a closing argument of the campaign.

His opponents say taking control of the House and Senate is the only way to stop Trump's agenda on issues like immigration, nominating judges, and healthcare.

Trump in campaign rallies had said that he was on the ballot and made it a referendum on his almost two years rule.

Even with the United States economy largely humming along, and Republican candidates desperate for Trump to highlight the gains, the president himself often prefers to rile up a crowd over immigration. Instead he promoted an expletive-loaded video featuring a Latino man convicted of murdering two police officers, which was widely decried as being racist.
