U.S. says 'handful more weeks' before sanctions over Khashoggi murder

Trump and his administration have been under increasing pressure to hold Saudi Arabia - and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in particular - accountable for the death of Khashoggi. Imagine what would happen if Saudi Arabia were destabilized.

He entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul a month ago to obtain documents for his upcoming marriage, but never left. Writing for The Washington Post, he became a prominent critic of the family, particularly bin Salman.

The US will need a "handful more weeks" to decide if Saudi Arabia should be somehow sanctioned for the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, Mike Pompeo has said, noting that Riyadh remains a "great partner" serving US national security.

"Jamal Khashoggi was not a unsafe person in any way possible".

Citing people familiar with the call, the New York Times and the Washington Post reported that the Saudi crown prince said Khashoggi belonged to the Muslim Brotherhood - outlawed by Riyadh and its Arab allies - and urged Kushner and Bolton to preserve the US-Saudi alliance.

The New York Times, Reuters and the Financial Times reported that the prince's return had sparked speculation about his role in the kingdom's crisis management efforts following the global outcry over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Earlier this month, press accounts quoted a Saudi official as saying the body of Jamal Khashoggi had been given to a local collaborator in Turkey to take care of, but no Saudi official has addressed its whereabouts on record. He denied such claims repeatedly over the past several years.

After Winfrey's speech, Abrams climbed the stage to join a discussion and was greeted by chants from the audience. Abrams' campaign has attracted support former President Barack Obama, who is rallying in the state on Friday.

Interestingly, they also met the heads of Saudi Arabia's so-called Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology (Etidal) and the Muslim World League.

"Despite our well-intentioned efforts to reveal the truth, no concrete results have come out of those meetings", the Istanbul chief prosecutor's office said, adding that it was in this light that it had been "obliged" to share the details about how Khashoggi was strangled and his body "dismembered and destroyed", in accordance with plans made in advance.

"Officials cautioned that no decision has been made, and Trump has expressed little desire to significantly alter US-Saudi relations, but there is an interest in a full vetting of the potential options", the Post said.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt also said it was an appalling act, adding that it had "possibly" given the United States and the UK a chance to put new pressure on Saudi Arabia over other issues.

Earlier, the USA called for a swift cessation of hostilities in Yemen, where a Saudi-led coalition has been fighting rebels supported by its arch-enemy Iran.

She described the "anguish" she experienced since his "brutal, barbaric and ruthless" death.
