Murdered Saudi journalist 'strangled as soon as he entered consulate'

Turkey alleges a hit squad from Saudi Arabia - including a member of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's entourage - traveled to Istanbul to kill the journalist and then tried to cover it up.

Saudi Arabia's top prosecutor, Saud al-Mojeb, arrived at Istanbul's main courthouse Tuesday for more talks with Istanbul's chief public prosecutor, Irfan Fidan, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

"We also noted that Saudi Arabia must extradite all 18 suspects to Turkey so that they can be held accountable for what they did", a senior Turkish official told CNN on Wednesday.

After initially saying Khashoggi had left the consulate alive, the Saudi administration admitted weeks later he had died there. He was last seen entering the building of the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul.

The ruling follows three days of unproductive meetings this week between a Saudi prosecutor and brother of King Salman, who was dispatched by Crown Prince Salman, and Turkish security officials. "He should not allow my fiance's murder to be covered up", she said in Turkish, according to a video published by British media.

The murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul was a violation of worldwide law, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had urged Saudi Arabia to disclose the facts behind the brutal murder including who ordered Khashoggi's murder and the location of his body.

The prosecutor also said discussions with Saudi chief prosecutor Saud al-Mojeb have yielded no "concrete results" despite "good-willed efforts" to uncover the truth. A Saudi prosecutor said that 18 people were arrested in connection with the death. Saudi Arabia only recently acknowledged Turkish evidence showed the slaying was premeditated.

Since the Washington Post columnist vanished earlier this month, Turkish officials have strategically leaked key developments in the case to control the narrative.

During a news conference with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis later Sunday, Mattis added that the evidence Turkey has collected "will ensure there is more than one review" of the incidents surrounding Khashoggi's death.
