Trump claims Paul Ryan 'knows nothing about' birthright citizenship

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution affirms that, with very few exceptions, all persons born in the US are American citizens, regardless of the immigration status of their parents, said the American Immigration Council.

Trump and Ryan have clashed in the past, but mostly the two Republicans have had a functional working relationship. "Guess what? You don't", Trump said in an interview with Axios. Critics of birthright citizenship say that the amendment was never meant to apply to children of two non-citizens - and particularly those who have come to the country illegally. But Ryan said Tuesday ending the policy would require a Constitutional amendment.

Utah Republican Mia Love said in a statement she has "always opposed Presidential attempts to change immigration law unilaterally".

"We didn't like it when Obama tried changing immigration laws via executive action, and obviously as conservatives, we believe in the constitution".

He wrote in a 2011 Wall Street Journal op-ed that it would be "unconstitutional" to change how the 14th Amendment was applied to birthright citizenship.

"Once here, the baby born is an American citizen", he said.

Asked about the legality of such an executive order, Trump said "they're saying I can do it just with an executive order".

"This case will be settled by the United States Supreme Court!" he added. I think there would nearly certainly be a lawsuit and the courts will decide.
