  • Suicide bomber targets electoral officials in Kabul

Police said the suicide bomber was on foot and detonated the explosives near the gate of the offices.

"The suicide bomber blew himself up next to a vehicle of an IEC [Independent Election Commission] staff member that was parked near a police checkpoint", said an election body official.

On the eve of the ballot, Afghan air strikes killed at least 56 Taliban militants in Kandahar's Shah Wali Kot district, provincial police spokesman Zia Durrani told AFP.

The residents in the Afghan province of Kandahar cast their vote today in the parliamentary elections, which were postponed due to an attack last week.

During two days of voting last weekend, insurgents launched some 250 attacks across the country, killing at least 50 people and wounding more than 100, the interior ministry said.

On the first day of the elections, 15 people were killed in a suicide attack in the capital Kabul.

One police officer was killed and six others, including election workers and policemen, were wounded in the blast.

The voting for parliamentary, Wolesi Jirga, elections kicked off in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan earlier today.

IEC figures suggest around half of the almost nine million people registered to vote actually cast a ballot.

In view of the challenging security environment in which the elections took place, the United Nations commends the many Afghans for their participation and recognizes the expectations citizens now have that the electoral authorities will ensure that their votes are counted and that any fraudulent ballots will be weeded out. But hiccups with biometric devices and voter lists persisted.

According to the IEC, 111 candidates from Kandahar were competing for 11 seats, including three for women, at the Lower House of the Afghan Parliament.

The taliban and the group islamic State had long promised attacks on the day of the vote.

Preliminary results of the elections held on October 20-21 are expected to be announced on November 10, while final results are due by December 20.
