  • Voter suppression becomes central issue in Georgia governor's race and other tight contests as midterms near

Abrams' spokeswoman Abigail Collazo said Abrams was involved in a "permitted, peaceful protest against the Confederate emblem in the flag" while a student at Spelman College in Atlanta in 1992.

"Twenty-six years ago as a college freshman, I along with many other Georgians - including the governor of Georgia - were deeply disturbed by the racial divisiveness that was embedded in the state flag with that Confederate symbol", she said.

The two are neck-and-neck according to most polls; Abrams is hoping to become the first female black governor in the country's history.

Republican Brian Kemp says he will not recuse himself as Georgia's chief elections officer even if his gubernatorial race with Democrat Stacey Abrams goes to a recount.

The two sides of Georgia's heated gubernatorial race appeared on stage together for their first debate Tuesday and familiar themes were on hand for the candidates, except a fire alarm about 5 minutes into the program.

"What I've asked for is that you allow those that are legally eligible to vote, to allow them to cast their ballots", she said.

Anyone who sees Jayme or anything suspicious is asked to call 911 or the Barron County Sheriff's Office at 715-537-3106. Investigators are looking for a red or orange Dodge Challenger and a black Ford Edge or black Acura MDX.

Abrams said that Kemp was twisting her words and her record of making it easier for legal citizens to vote. "Because under (his) eight years of leadership, Mr. Kemp has created an atmosphere of fear around the right to vote in the state of Georgia".

Georgia's poor track record on civil rights issues helps to explain why Abrams, throughout her career in public service, has long dedicated herself to franchising new voters. "Mr. Kemp and his allies have sought to portray her as 'too extreme for Georgia'".

Early in his remarks, Kemp complained about the "tens of millions of dollars that [Abrams' campaign] are putting behind the get-out-the-vote effort to their base" before claiming that the Abrams was hoping to gain from on absentee ballot requests. The face-to-face meeting was expected to be contentious in part because of all the voter suppression allegations facing Brian Kemp, who is polling neck-and-neck with Abrams.

Abrams is now locked in a dead heat with Republican candidate Kemp, who is getting high praise from the oval office. The flag prominently featured the Confederate battle emblem, a symbol that has strong historical associations with racism and white supremacy.
