At least 20 people have reportedly been injured when a crowded escalator collapsed at a train station in Rome.

Most of the injured are Russian, but a small number are Italian, according to the newspaper.

RAI, the state television broadcaster, aired a video of the incident, showing the escalator suddenly accelerating, with people piling up at the bottom.

CSKA Moscow fans were left fearing for their safety tonight as a an escalator on the Rome metro network malfunctioned, causing it to move at dangerously high speeds.

La Repubblica reported (via Reuters) that fans were chanting, singing, and jumping up and down on the escalator before it broke.

The fans were apparently there to root for the CSKA Moscow team.

The official Twitter account for Rome's emergency services tweeted a photo of the mangled escalator.

At least 20 people were injured in the carnage, with one fan's foot partially severed and seven others seriously injured, reports La Repubblica. Italian media said some soccer supporters were trapped between the metal plates of the steps.

The station was closed immediately and four ambulances were parked at one of the entrances.
