  • Mexico Steps Up After Trump Threatens to Close the Border and Cut Aid

On the bridge, some of the migrants were hanging from the closed gate that represents the border at Tacun Uman, Guatemala, and Mexico, wailing and saying they were hungry.

This frame grab from video provided by Televisa, shows migrants bound for the U.S. -Mexico border waiting on a bridge that stretches over the Suchiate River, connecting Guatemala and Mexico, in Tecun Uman, Guatemala, Friday, Oct. 19, 2018.

Now they are stuck on a bridge over a river that marks the border. But the message didn't appear to resonate with members of the caravan Thursday who "violently" tore down fenced barriers and injured Mexican police in order to make a path for thousands to pour into Mexico.

The latest caravan (pictured above left) started in Honduras a week ago and within a few days its numbers swelled to an estimated 4,000 men, women and children from that country, Guatemala and El Salvador hoping to cross into the U.S.to escape extreme poverty and crime back home.

Could Trump close the US-Mexican border?

Mexican police in riot gear set off smoke canisters and pushed them back.

However, by the end of Thursday, the USA president was also thanking Mexico for its efforts to contain the caravan.

"The Mexican Government is fully engaged in finding a solution that encourages safe, secure, and orderly migration", State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Saturday, "and both the United States and Mexico continue to work with Central American governments to address the economic, security, and governance drivers of illegal immigration".

The U.S. president has made it clear to Mexico that he is monitoring its response.

"May Trump's heart be touched so he lets us through", Rodriguez said.

Thousands of Central American migrants stormed the northern Guatemalan border on Friday, successfully forcing their way into Mexican territory as part of a larger effort to reach the United States. And we're going to have the military stationed.

Erika Guevara-Rosas of Amnesty International said in a statement: "These families deserve dignity and respect to ensure that no-one is illegally returned to situations where they could risk serious harm due to violence".

At a news conference with Videgaray, Pompeo called illegal migration a "crisis" and emphasized "the importance of stopping this flow before it reaches the USA border", while also acknowledging Mexico's right to handle the crisis in a sovereign fashion.

Ambassador Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno added that more than 100 migrants had been allowed to cross the bridge to apply for refugee status, including some who were from the caravan and others who were not.

"They put all the women and children up front", he said.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has partnered with the United States in the past on immigration-related issues. "We are not going to attend to the issue only with deportations or means of force".

"You got some bad people in those groups, you got some tough people in those groups". The last migrants of the caravan are expected to arrive later on Friday, migrants said.

It is unclear how many individuals or law enforcement officers have been wounded or hurt by the migrant's rioting.

Juan Escobar, 24, said he had heard about Trump's comments but said they would not dissuade the migrants from continuing their journey. "Yes, we are seeing some spikes in Central Americans crossing the border, but overall migration is at a 40-year low", Oglesby said.
