Will Elizabeth Warren's Identity Theft Help Kill Affirmative Action?

  • Warren DNA analysis points to Native American heritage

We host a roundtable discussion of Native American activists and journalists to respond to Warren's DNA test and the subsequent media coverage.

The test results found Warren had five segments of potentially Native American ancestry, although the results indicated that the tests in fact only checked for Mexican, Peruvian and Colombian ancestry, since there are not enough Native Americans who have submitted DNA to databases to make definitive comparisons possible. For one thing, what makes someone a Native American? Harvard claims her "minority status" did not bear on her hiring, but Harvard promoted Warren's hire as expanding their campus diversity by hiring a woman with "minority background" onto their faculty.

This week, the US senator released a slick video with the results of her own DNA test.

Taking such tests, larding counter-claims with weapons of putative fact, simply plays into the pantomime of provocation and mockery that Trumpland inspires; you dignify such shows of provocation further by conceding to your opponent that he might have had something to go on in the first place, the absurd or irrelevant rendered plausible.

Skeptics have long mocked Warren citing her grandfather's "high cheekbones" as proof, and Trump has referred to the senator as "Pocahontas" poking fun at her alleged ties. She also released a campaign video relating a story about a Native American on her mother's side.

She said she released the results "because I've got nothing to hide".

Warren is ineligible for Cherokee membership.

Sony Pictures has the rights to certain Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, even though Disney owns Marvel Entertainment. Directed by Karey Kirkpatrick, the film features the voices of James Corden, Channing Tatum and Danny DeVito among others.

Trump's references to Warren as "fake Pocahontas" are particularly offensive because they show how pop culture has glossed over the treatment of Native Americans, particularly women, said Chelsey Branham, a member of the Chickasaw Nation.

"Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong", Hoskin Jr. wrote. Having said that, "I'll only do it if I can test her personally, OK?"

The test results were not exactly what Elizabeth Warren must have expected: The report on Warren's DNA concludes that there is "strong evidence" that the senator had a Native American in her family tree dating back six to 10 generations. In 2012, she admitted that she did so "in the hopes that might mean that I would be invited to a luncheon a group something with people who are like I am". This was not unlike Europe itself at that time, which helps explain why early Americans agreed to treaties with tribes that recognized the boundaries of several tribes. Powerful people like Warren and Graham could potentially harm tribal communities by putting DNA at the center of conversations about identity.

"There's a distinction between [tribal] citizenship and ancestry", she told the Globe on Tuesday.

Throughout my childhood, I witnessed many incidences of racism - whether they were directed at me, my sister, or my father. But that hasn't stopped some from confusing her Indian heritage with Native Americans - including, she joked, the president. "What she was trying to do was put this to bed so she could run against President Donald Trump in 2020".

"I'm going to take it, but the results are going to be revealed here", he said.

When "Fox and Friends" co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked Mullin if he was "offended" by Warren's attempt to use her Native American heritage "to try to win elections". And then times changed and her granddaughter saw some benefit, which she now couches in terms of identity politics as a personal choice, and says that no matter what anyone says, her Native heritage will "always be etched on my heart".
