Record jackpots are up for grabs in the Canadian LOTTO MAX draw and the U.S. Mega Millions jackpot.

All week, the climbing Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots have been awakening the frivolous dreamers inside of us. And if you're reading this story, you'll probably buy a ticket so here are five things to think about if the second largest jackpot in US history has given you lottery fever.

For comparison, MI players bought 3.8 million tickets for Tuesday night's drawing - with 2.6 million purchased on Tuesday alone - when the jackpot was $667 million.

According to Lottery USA, the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are one in 302.6 million, and the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are one in 292.2 million.

Two big jackpots at the same time, says Smithfield News owner Kashif Malik, adds up to more ticket buyers.

This can get complicated, but for the most part winners pay taxes where they bought the ticket and then can get a credit on their taxes in their home state.

The drawing, which rose from $667 million on Tuesday when no one had the lucky six numbers, will take place on Friday at 11 p.m. EDT (0300 GMT Saturday).

Journalists from several media houses attacked by Sabarimala protesters
Sanjeev, Dharma Sena, one of the main groups organizing the protests, said they were happy women had been prevented from entering. Two years ago, activists successfully campaigned to end a ban on women entering the Shani Shingnapur temple in Maharashtra state.

"That catches people off guard", she said.

The prize is so big that Kurland said he will probably buy a ticket himself.

If you go to the Minnesota Lottery headquarters in Roseville tomorrow between noon and 1 p.m., they're giving away one ticket each to the first 250 people that show up. Odds are based on the amount of numbers you can choose and the number of combinations available.

The jackpot goes to a victor who matches the five numbers and the Powerball number.

The awful odds of winning don't stop people from playing, because with a jackpot of $970 million dollars, dreamers say "Why not?"

KDKA money editor Jon Delano admits he nearly never buys lottery tickets.
