Other players vying for the 2018 Ballon d'Or include last year's victor Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Harry Kane, Eden Hazard and Antoine Griezmann.

The 33-year-old won the FIFA The Best award earlier in the year, pipping Ronaldo and Salah to the trophy.

Others are: Edinson Cavani from Uruguay, Paris St Germain; Thibaut Courtois from Belgium, Real Madrid; Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal, Juventus; Kevin De Bruyne from Belgium, Manchester City.

England only have one representative on the list in Harry Kane while Gareth Bale is also among the nominees.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been included in the list alongside Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Now the first five Ballon d'Or nominees have been released which include two players from the Premier League and two players from La Liga side Real Madrid.

China tells Trump administration to stop its ‘misguided’ actions and allegations
Mike Pompeo , the USA secretary of state, made the announcement after a Sunday meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un . He said Chinese leader Xi Jinping was also expected to travel to North Korea but did not elaborate further.

The ceremony to announce the victor will take place in Paris on 3 December, when a women's award will also be presented for the first time.

Federation Internationale de Football Association split from the Ballon d'Or in 2016 to launch its own set of awards.

Modric's worldwide team-mates Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic are also on the shortlist, as are Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

They are joined by Mbappe's France team-mates Hugo Lloris, Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane, as well as Croatia star Luka Modric, who won the World Cup Golden Ball.

Remember the criteria for the Ballon d'Or are: the players' performances during the calendar year, their talent and fair play, and their achievements throughout their career.

The award merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year prize from 2010-2015 to create the FIFA Ballon d'Or, but returned to France Football magazine in 2016 while FIFA established The Best awards.
