The Lyon-based global police agency said in a brief statement Saturday that it used law enforcement channels to submit its request about the status of Meng Hongwei.

French police have opened an investigation into the reported disappearance last week of Meng Hongwei, the Chinese head of the worldwide police organisation Interpol, a source close to the inquiry said.

Meng's wife went to police in Lyon Thursday night to report his disappearance, according to a statement released by the French Interior Ministry.

Meng is the first from his country to serve as Interpol's president, a post that is largely symbolic but powerful in status.

"Man Humvees, who also holds the position of Deputy Minister in the Ministry of public security of the PRC, was "detained for questioning by law enforcement authorities, "as soon as (his plane - ed.) landed in China", the message reads".

Meng's family lost touch with him after he travelled from France, where the police body is based, to China, one week ago.

It said: "This is a matter for the relevant authorities in both France and China".

But Interpol has in the past denied this, saying its head does not intervene in day-to-day operations, which are handled by secretary-general Juergen Stock, a German. His term as Interpol president runs until 2020.

But the South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong newspaper, hinted that Meng may have been the latest target of an ongoing campaign against corruption in China.

PML-N Spokesperson, Marriyum Aurangzeb says arrest of Shahbaz Sharif by NAB is an act of political vengeance. Shahbaz's son-in-law Ali Imran Yousuf is also facing corruption inquiries in this case.

When Mr Meng was elected in 2016 as Interpol president, rights groups expressed concern that he would pursue an agenda of politicised policing that targeted Mr Xi's opponents.

Far from being a Hollywood-style agency with agents toting weapons across the globe, Interpol is low-profile and discrete about its cases, unless it wants to talk.

The French police acted swiftly and launched a probe for Meng on Friday after being contacted by his wife.

Meng's last official engagement, according to his page on China's Ministry of Public Security's website, was in August.

People have been known to disappear into the commission's custody for weeks or even months without a word.

"Yellow notices" are issued for missing persons.

Meng rose up the ranks of the country's domestic security apparatus when it was under the leadership of Zhou Yongkang, a rival to Xi and the highest-ranking official to be brought down on corruption charges.

Has Meng Hongwei angered China?
